Mods - ATRAC & Locking rear dif in other than 4L

I was wondering if you ever got this to work?

I didn't care for locking the rear diff in 4HI, but I wanted to use this to activate KDSS in 4HI.

Coming from a Jeep Rubicon where I could disconnect the front sway bar in 4HI, it bugs me I have to be in 4LO to let the sways loose in the 4Runner.

Here’s my update to previous post above. Got back to searching for the recent quote I was thinking of where 12 MPH was stated. This has been brought up at other times too, but it’s not often mentioned.

The Actuator cylinder puts pressure on the front sway bar at speeds over around 12 mph that limits the torsion effect of that sway bar. .

Thanks for the info.

From what I've read before, KDSS is also tied into Multi-terrain control. As you select Mogul or Rock it will loosen the sway bars more than if you had selected Sand.

Now that I've done more research the majority say that is a passive system under a certain mph, not tied to the Muti-terrain control.

So I guess I'm good. Haha.

You would think that you could set up a switch just to lock the locker from the wiring at the axle. Has anyone tried this?

I don't think anyone has tried, my guess is is the dash lights up like a Christmas tree ( I am assuming there is feedback from the rear locker) and once the truck sees its engaged but not in 4Lo it will be unhappy buts its a good angle that might be worth a shot.

You're probably right. Activating the locker is probably the easy part, dealing with the computers' reaction to it could be much harder.

Gotcha ... I'll just have to remember to not leave the switch on during start up or shutdown. I just think having a second button redundant.

Just thinking about how leaving this engaged (or grounded) and then turning the car off throws CELs...

Is there a type of switch we can use that automatically resets/disables when the ignition is turned off?

For example, the traction control switch operates like this. Press it, it turns "trac off". Toggle the ignition, it is automatically reset.

Same with the 400W AC 120V enable/disable button. If you turn the ignition on, you can press to enable it. Turn the ignition back off, it resets.

I'm no expert in switch types, but there's lots of different kinds out there (SPST, SPDT, DPDT, etc etc)

Is there a specific type of switch that would operate as such?

Spitballing here: with a momentary switch paired with a PAC TR-7, I think that may reset after power is lost, i.e: ignition turned off.

Here's the manual on programming it. Check Options #11...

Oh, here's a link to the PAC TR-7 on Amazon. Sounds like a lot of work, but the parts are cheap.

He did do it fairly easy, however, other members have stated that they have done it the same way resulting in a check engine light. I don't believe he has done anything differently, leading me to believe he deals with a check engine light on occasion as well.

I think when I have more time off ... I plan to revisit this mod and put in a switch to see if that'll work for me... I'll keep you guys posted

It looks like this has been beat to death... But I'm wondering if anyone has a tried and true 'why' on the check engine light. I also would like this to be a single switch operation and if the cel only comes on if I go too fast, and then goes back off.. I'm good with that. If it's for unknown reasons, then not as much. Thoughts?

Dragging out an old thread...
I have a 2012 TE Id love to do this locker mod on. I'd like to not add a switch but understand the need to have one. I'm the only one that drives the truck so I'm not worried about adding any safety component in here. My thought was to run the ground from light gauge wire that you all are grounding through a switch, though a relay. When the relay is powered the ground is complete. Id like to power the relay from one of the wires coming from the locker switch itself, so when you hit the locker switch the relay is powered and completes the ground to fool the ECU into thinking the truck is in 4lo.
1. Can anyone think of why this wouldn't work?
2. Has anyone tried it?
3. I need some help determining which wire from the locker switch would be appropriate to power the relay from.
4. If I have the locker switch engaged at what point does power get cut to it when the key is turned off?
I'm trying to avoid the situation described above when the ground switch (bypass, safety, whatever you like calling it) is on and the truck gets turned off and then back on a CEL is thrown.
5. Lastly this mod doesn't fool the ATRAC into working over 4mph correct? Just lets it work in 2/4Hi under 4mph...
