Molle Window Panel

They make tons of Molle stuff for the FJ's....
Maybe they will try to capture the T4R audience next!
 
I've toyed around with this idea for a while, a few people who wheel with me know I have been planning to get around to doing this to my own vehicle.

The OP's linked product though is poorly designed and engineered for the following reasons:

-The MOLLE attachment pattern is a very generic one that limits attachment & ease of use.

-The attachment points are suspect, while you could conceivably place 20~40lbs of MOLLE equipment, it is all weighted on a single factory coat hanger hook and then anchored into plastic paneling. In the event of an accident that could easily break loose and become a projectile.

-The fact that the MOLLE plate itself is the frame is also troublesome as with that many holes (despite being steel) it will be very floppy with weight on it.

I've looked into doing this for my 4th Gen 4Runner and actually have the tracings/measurements from the 3rd quarter window area (as well as a 5th gen) and have tinkered with the idea a bit. Unfortunately it's all mostly scribbles in a notebook as life has been a bit rough lately and I haven't had the opportunity (or motivation) to get to TechShop to knock out a prototype yet. I do have a rough design with a MOLLE pattern that I'd like to waterjet cut and test out on the 4th gen first; interestingly enough, the 2nd~5th 4Runner 3rd row windows are very similar in general design and shape that theoretically if you have the tracings and measurements a generic "platform" could just be slightly modified to fit multiple generations... (another casualty of Life along with my disconnecting sway bar project that was pushed onto the back burner :( )

[MENTION=89562]bimrunner[/MENTION] That is an absolutely bad ass design. I don't know how viable it is for the 4Runners because of how our glass is; but that is a beautiful work of art right there with a lot of thought and engineering behind it!

I have tried to get SpringTail Solutions to show some interest in the 4Runner line like they have the FJ Cruisers and Jeeps, but they gave me a generic line about "not enough market potential, we don't see the point in the R&D." :rolleyes:

Their products are really good and I LOVE their rip-away MOLLE packs; but honestly it seems they get most of their money from Government/LEO/Fire contracts than the few off-road vehicles they have products for. So I understand the reluctance to invest in that.
 
MOLLE panels

I just spoke with an upholstery place today about making some MOLLE panels for the back seats. My current idea is something that will screw into seat around the border of the panel, one panel for each back seat leaving the middle armrest open. My goal is a lower cost option, perhaps not as high-speed as some may require. Is anyone else interested? If this works well with this upholsterer, I could present other ideas/patterns.

They go in the window so people can see how tactical you are. There are so many logical places to put stuff like this, but I'm convinced that the window thing is pure show.

I for one don't use those windows except for decals. On the other hand I use every available inch of flat space with my rear seats down, so this is a practical option for getting some more room in my opinion. If you don't like them don't buy them. Could I afford these, or are they viable as a seal against weather long term? I don't know. But they do pique my interest. I would be just as happy to pull the windows and leave these panels closed to keep them weatherproof anyway.

It's where I have mounted first aid and pouches for misc items like flashlight, knife etc to use when camping/wheeling. far better place for me to be organized and really easy to access.

The rear quarter windows are next to useless on most SUVs, the only ones that are really worth a damn are like the Excursion and so on that are built on really long platforms. There's also a lot of negative space in those windows, so using them to store things so that they do not impede cargo space is a very good idea.

That pop-up window is pretty damn cool!
 
I'm for it. Trying to do my gen3, but I'm thing of using welded wire in a dimension that works for molle. Some welded wire panels are plastic coated. For mounts I'm leaning towards a u shaped strap and trick fasteners. Then mout and add LEDs.

Pure show Bro! No windows just a bit of extra storage and and easier access to the rear for those who have swing outs...:dammit:

Sorry guys, I should have been more clear; I was referring to just the molle panel with my poo poo'ing comments. The swing up thingie is neat, and I loved the sliding windows in my 80 series, but the swing up type looks even better.

Gotcha, if it's like his other windows it should be available without the molle set up as well.
 
If you were planning on putting metal grate/bars over windows for security anyways then a metal molle panel makes sense, but this looks a little too tacti-cool for my taste
