Definitely a cool place. I was there with a couple friends in March 2017. We did the whole loop trail around the monuments. Highly recommended.

Not so much around Monument Valley. Most of the land is owned by the Navajo. You have to pay to get into the park for do the scenic drive. While it's scenic it can really be done by any car and the Monuments are pretty commercialized. There is a campground right nearby the park and if you want to camp inside you have to get a permit. Monument Valley is nice to look at but its not nearly has secluded or adventurous as pictures make it seem.

Yeah, I've been to Arizona a few times and was always disappointed. About 3/4 of the state is either National Parks or Indian reservations, and much of what's left is fenced/posted private property. Not many places you can just freely roam and camp.

lmao what? You can freely roam the national parks....theres thousands of miles of forest service roads/trails.

about 90% of the fenced properties have signs that just ask you to close the gate behind as you pass through the land

Most national parks I've seen make you pay to enter, so I don't even bother going there. Plus the national parks I have been to, such as Death Valley, are always closing trails and roads, so you can't even count on getting to where you want to go.

Maybe there are places like that in AZ, but I never found them. All the fenced properties I saw were posted No Trespassing. It sucks to spend hours driving to someplace only to find it inaccessible when you get there -- especially when my time is so extremely limited.

theres literally thousands of trails within 2 hours of phoenix. I spent 5 hours in a 20 mile spot on Tuesday about 50 miles north of phoenix in 3-6" of snow.:guitar2:

I drove by monument valley once, and i agree, its a cool photo spot but thats really it. Id rather hit lake powell and the grand canyon.

I believe all land around Monument Valley is Tribal and therefor Tribal laws/rules apply. Forest and Park Service and BLM have nothing to do with it until you're north of San Juan River.
