Moonroof noise while closing

Moonroof noise while closing on 4th gen

So I originally had the moonroof fixed due to getting stuck a few years ago, and there has always been a noise whenever it closes, like something isn't greased. If i pushed the moonroof cover up the noise would be minimized while it is closing. Does anyone else with a 4th gen have this noise issue? There's also a plastic rattling noise when I'm driving and I have both the moonroof and rear window open. I know people have done a diy fix, but I'm wondering if Toyota fixed this issue as well.

There was a TSB issued a while back that involved removing the original grease in the sunroof mechanism and replacing it with a different grease. Did you have that done? If I remember correctly, some 4Runners had grease that hardened in the tracks and could cause the sunroof to jam when sliding open or closed.

They had done the sunroof TSB but I think the tech forgot to put the grease on the track because it is really noisy whenever it closes.

You can see the grease yourself if you slide the sunroof all the way back and look at the tracks. There should be a white lithium grease visible there. If not, I'd bring it back and tell them to lube it.

ok i'll call the dealer and set up an appointment to grease the tracks. Hope it doesn't take long or mess up my headliner. Last time the tech broke the driver side vanity mirror and I didn't know until a couple months after I got the moonroof tsb done.

well i'm not sure which parts need the grease and if it's easily accessible. I would do it myself in a heartbeat if it's easy to do.

Did we ever work out what the grease was and where it needs to go? My 03 seems like it makes more noise than my 06, and I've always thought to myself, it seems like a "dry" rubbing sound.

yeah it's definitely a dry rubbing noise(plastic on plastic). I haven't taken it to the dealer yet but I probably will to have other things checked out before the plat warranty expires in march.

True. When I'm done studying I'll take a peak in the FSM and see if there is anything. I'll post my findings, if any.

True? I don't know where to find the TSBs, so I'll check the FSM first (since it's on my computer), and if it's not there, I'll do a little poking around for the TSB. Thanks for the tip!

The TSB is somewhere on this forum. If I had copied it, I'd post it for you. I'm sure you can find it by searching the forum though.

Plastic strip broke loose on my 08

The plastic strip on the right side tracking mechanism was breaking loose, dragging, made lots of noise, binding some, so I removed it. Works fine and quite since I removed it.

Will go to Toyota some day to get them to put a new one in?????

whats the excuse they gave you for not covering it? check out the tsb pdf in the link to the other thread i posted. you might be able to fix it yourself.

Thanks - got it "fixed" by the dealership and it was expensive. My wife is now advised never to open the sunroof. It's a defective design...period. Toyota's excuse was that it wasn't "broken" just a malfunction (due to the poor design!)

Of course, about 4 months ago they replaced the driver's seat track (under Platinum warranty), and that was a poor design as well. I used the argument that it was a safety issue.

Try to figure the logic out sometimes....:ak472::redbrick:
