more heater

quick question my 88 when i start it cold heats up fine ..while it idlesover 1000 rpm heat stays fine but if i stop at a set of lights starts blowing cold and stays until i start driving again ...topped up my fluid ..figure its just tstat? dont want to start replacing everything..if you think it is the soluton can you let me know so i can do whatever means to fix my problem gets cold whenthe freeway becomes a parking lot....thanks

It sounds like a vacuum leak on the hose going to the blend doors. Thermostat is not the problem. Could also be clogged heater core.
 
I think the '88 used cables, not vacuum hoses for the heater controls.

It could be the wrong temp thermostat, so you're thermostat is closing and blocking off flow because your engine is creating less heat.
 
I think I'd blast out the heater core with water under pressure. Hey Dingman did you ever get to that injector?

No, I can't get the damn air intake chamber off. It's stuck on one of the bolts towards the back. I'm planning on making a post about it soon... And I still need the injector... My poor truck's been sitting for 2 months. :mad:
 
I have the same "problem". However, it blows warm for a while (slowly cooling) when the truck is sitting. I just figured that the vehicle wasn't producing as much heat so it wasn't warming that well.......no?......
 
my temputure gauge also drops when the cold air coems out i start driving and it picks it up to normal until i let off the gas

Now that does sound like a thermostat problem. Do you even have a thermostat in there?
