more MAF questions

1998 3.4L V6 4x4

Okay, I acknowledge the fact that I'm a novice Saturday morning mechanic, but I need help here.

I have the electronics cleaner and I'm ready to get my MAF sensor removed/cleaned, but my 1998 is a totally different set-up than those shown on the previous threads.

What do I need to do to detach/clean my MAF? I know it's a PITA, but pictures would be much appreciated.

I did some research on this forum, and this topic was previously brought up about a year ago, but the answers really aren't helping me. Thanks in advance.

there should be a wire attached to your OEM intake. take a picture and i'll see if i could point out where you could also clean.

After much searching on google, I was able to come across a few other Toyota forums online.

I found a thread from about a year ago where someone with a 1998 had the same problem that I was - my MAF looked nothing like the one shown on the majority of the models, or the one on 4x4wire's maintenance photos.

Anyway, the MAF on my 98 is actually part of the intake tube. In fact the guy on the other forum described the MAF as looking a like an airplane engine - it actually does once you get it off. You actually have to remove 2 mounting bolts, then kind of forcefully remove it from the intake tube. Not the easiest 'maintenance' item I can think of.

I don't know how accurate the other forum's facts are, but it's claimed that Toyota used this MAF arrangement for approximately a year and a half. From sometime in late 96/early 97 to the early 98 models.

It makes sense for mine I suppose, my 98 was built in November 1997.

Anyway, it cleaned up nicely and I already notice a pretty significant improvement in the 'ride'.
