More modern engine?

I have a 1990 with a six cylinder in it. It's also 4wd. New clutch, rebuilt tranny, good suspension. Next major repair is replacing the head gaskets. According to the mechanic I have used for big repairs it's gonna cost me about 2800 bucks just to do that because of the other random crap that needs replacing. My boot ain't made anymore and well I could ghetto one up from random parts that might be close to fitting to save money. My throttle seems to constantly be going crazy and needs adjustment every few days.

Figure at 2800 bucks, why not just get a new engine when the mechanic told me they'd swap it for 400 in labor if I brought the engine. My other thought is perhaps maybe a bit better gas mileage.

I'm new to the whole toyota ordeal. What can I find and use for this vehicle? I didn't take off the damn transfer box myself and fix the 4wd for nothing.

There's 5/7MGE swaps, GM 4.3 V6 swaps, Chevy 350 V8 swaps, etc.
Just depends on how much time and money you have.

$2800 is way too much for a HG job.
Almost any engine can be swapped in for a price... or you could just buy a 3rd gen with a 3.4 already running and driving.
