More rear end questions

Ok I've been reading about Toyota rear diffs til my head hurts.

I looked up my axle code (A03A) and the best I can tell thats a 7.5 inch rear end with 4.10 gears. Am I correct on that?

That leads into this question.....I'm about to take it all apart to change drive pinion bearings (fingers crossed for that being the only damage), if i get into it and everything is torn to crap and I need to rebuild/replace I would like to go to 8inch gears since there seems to be more options and from what I can find they are more durable. So, what all would be required to go to 8 inch gears? New third member, ring and pinion? Or whole new case, gears, third member, whole she-bang? Just curious at this point, but if there is gear damage 8 inch salvage rearends seem a lot more plentiful.

And, why couldn't they just make them all 8 inch to start with?????

I don't believe Toyota ever used a 7.5" Rear diff in any of their 4wd stuff, only the early 2wd trucks had them if I remember right.

You should have an 8" diff, with 4.10 gears most likely, only way to find out what gears you have definitely is to do the "spin test" or count the gear teeth.

Your best bet if you are looking for junkyard parts will probably be pulling a whole third member out and dropping it in. Around here, stock thirds go for 100-150$ at a u-pull-it.
