I started in January with a 4x6 cargo trailer I bought new for under $1500. The first thing I did was have a local welder flip the spring perches to level it with the 4Runner. Spent the next 5 months adding the RTT, awning, and assorted other parts.
I bought this with the intention of using it as a base camp for long wheeling weekends, NOT for use as an overlanding trailer. As pictured in the last shot I have ~$3300 total in it including the RTT and awning. It has been on 2 long weekend camping/wheeling trips at off road parks in Louisiana and Texas, and I've put roughly 1500 road miles on it. It has handled the main access trails at the parks fine, with the obvious need to slow speed it through off camber sections. In the camp picture with the canopy everything in the camp came out of the trailer, and I still had an 8 man tent and 2 full size cots inside it with 2 Scepter water cans. Even the little 2' ladder goes in there against the door (I've found it handier for placing the bow springs in the tent fly openings instead of doing them from inside). I may eventually upgrade to 15" wheels and fenders, but so far I am completely satisfied with the end result.
I mounted the RTT so it could be easily and quickly swapped to the roof rack on the 4Runner for when I get to do the rare "overlanding" style trip we have available to us in my part of the country. I'm not touting it as the be all/end all option for everyone, but it fit my budget, skill level, and needs as I saw them. My problem now is to stop getting constant ideas on what else to do to it! The next expense will likely be to add a pair of shocks as I'm told they help a lot with side to side sway on trails. I did consider a 5x8 size cargo trailer but so far I have no regrets, and there is still room inside this little guy.
