most compact air comp for emergency only use?

i have read many of you say to get Viair brand of compressor

I am not looking for those heavy duty versions for off roading etc

this is going to be used for emergency only

and would like the most compact reliable i can find.

your thoughts for which model to get?

that's a tightrope, and only you can decide. There's diminishing returns for size vs performance-- And I mean by a large magnitude.

for example, I helped air someone up not long ago in a parking lot. He had a compressor the size of a beer can spazzing out on the ground beside his tire. He said he had been inflating for over 30 minutes. Tire still looked totally flat. I hooked my smittybilt 2781 (the opposite of small) up and aired it up in 30 seconds. And I had to let some air out to bring it back down to a proper pressure!

before that I had a canadian tire special that I carried around for years that would eventually fill a truck tire, but the hose shot off it when I really needed it most, and it totally let me down in the dark, on a highway, after a day of roofing. I put my faith in a POS emergency compressor. Lesson learned.

I'm sure some viair users will have some good recommendations. My contribution is: don't go too cheap - even if it is for emergency use

My Viair 88 has worked for several off road weekends this year and does all 4 tires in about 20 minutes with cool down breaks. It has become my primary.

If you are just looking for an emergency compressor that will do one or 2 tires fairly quickly I also have a little $40 job that does great, it just needs more cool down time between tires. It plugs into a lighter socket and it fits in a plastic 5.56mm ammo can. I bought it 3 years ago, and it also has a thermal shutoff if it gets too hot to prevent damage. I keep it in the rig to loan to other drivers who haven't got one.

I have a VIAIR 88P and it has been great. Airs me back up when I air down with no issue and it's very compact and light weight. Can get it on Amazon for less than $60.

I have the VIAIR 70p. Takes a little while to air up from ~20-40 each tire but works fine.

Those little slime units aren't worth it, had one in my 350z...it would overheat before filling up low profile tires...so basically you had to wait til they cool off....it took about 40 munited for low profile tires, can't imagine how long they would take with regular tires

After having several of the compact air compressors fail, I finally went with a Smittybilt:

Not compact, but very capable and has lasted well.
