Most Competent Stock SUVs

I'm bored at work and was curious what people here think are the top 10 STOCK SUVs in terms of overall offroad capabilities. I went to Edmunds.com to find all of the current model SUVs and eliminated all the crossover crap. Here's what's currently available in terms of SUVs with at least some level of offroad credibility. If you're bored like me, reply with your top-10 list along with some explanations.

Here's my guess:

1. Jeep Wrangler
2. Mercedes Benz G Class
3. Toyota FJ Cruiser
4. Land Rover LR3
5. Nissan Xterra
6. Land Rover Range Rover
7. Lexus GX470 (with that optional suspension)
8. Toyota 4Runner
9. Hummer H2
10. Toyota Land Cruiser


I'm not an offroader. This is just my gut feeling without doing any real research.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon - hands down

heavier D44 axles front & rear
locker front & rear
4.0 crawler gear in the t-case
solid front axle
coil spring suspension front & rear

nothing stock like that can touch it

^WTF. You didn't even put the 4runner in there.

There has been a big discussion on this in the 3rd Gen section. We have decided it's not fair to compare out of class. The G550 with a price tag of $100,250 SHOULD out perform the Nissian Xterra just based on price and does.

Xtrerras aren't that great. My cousin has one I really don't like it. I would put the 4runner in the top 7. I think the 4runner is great in that you can wheel it all day and then still drive it home in comfort.

I'd have to agree. I also have to point out that those of you who are separating the 4Runner from the FJ by 5 or more ranks are very mistaken.

I understand. I just think that the FJ and 4Runner are much more similar than people realize.

x2. I have the G-wagen, but i admit that the Rubicon short-wheelbase rules off-road.

BTW, how did a LR3 outperform a G off-road?? :D
 
Is a Jeep Wrangler even concidered a SUV IMHO its not, so it shouldnt be listed as such, but IMO the Ruicon, out of the box is pretty sweet, I cant say much about the others, as Ive never wheeled them

Even though it may not look like one, but i think that it is classified as one.

With the exception of the 2009 4runner Trail Edition model, the FJ is better than 4runner due to:

1. Better approach/breakover/departure angles
2. More flex in the suspension
3. Better ground clearance (due to stiffer springs?)
4. REAR LOCKER
5. 4-LO only A-TRAC ("super" ATRAC)

Shouldn't we distinguish between the 3rd and 4th 4runners?
 
I think I'd leave the LR3 out of that list. It might get you out there, but it's questionable whether it would get you back. I have some friends with a loaded LR3 and it is always in the shop, when it isn't at the shop, it's at the gas station filling up with the required premium.
