Motive type brake bleeders?

Anybody use a Motive or similar brake bleeder kit? What did you use? Just generic DOT3? Did you end up filling the whole jug than pressurizing it and pushing it through? Do you just open a bleeder on one caliper at a time? any thoughts on this? Any negatives? Havent dont my fluid in6 years..so its way past time. Thoughts and comments appreciated, thanks guys!

The Motive bleeders work well as long as you don't run out of fluid.

Brake fluid seems to suspend very tiny, tiny air bubbles for long periods, which in turn becomes air in your system, so be very careful in handling the and pouring the fluid.

I have one but never use it. The rear brakes are self bleeding (look it up), I have my wife help bleed the front brakes. It's a super quick job

I like the response from [MENTION=134661]Xtremluck[/MENTION]. With the ABS pump pushing the fluid out the rear and a helper in the front it's quick and almost easy.

I have a Motive Extractor and it is a lot easier than the pressure bleeders. On the 4Runner it's only needed for the front. I also suction out most of the old fluid from the master cylinder with it. If you have other vehicles it may be worth the cost.

I use DOT 4 synthetic fluid.

what master cylinder part number did you need for the adapter?

No adapter, it does not connect to the master cylinder.

The vacuum line from the container is connected to each caliper bleed screw and the brake fluid is drawn out through the system.

I also use the vacuum line to draw from the bottom of the master cylinder to remove most but not all of the brake fluid. It can be used for the power steering pump reservoir too.

I have their power fill for the tranny and diff service and it works awesome but I made a mistake and should have bought the fill/extractor. I have been wanting one to brake bleeding but their site said they did not offer anything that fit the master cylinder/abs pump combo. Now it just says to send in your OD measurements for the Runner and my GTO. I think I'm going to order soon or at least contact them to see if they have anything.

Also some Toyota and Lexus use an integrated master cylinder abs unit where the ABS unit is either directly below the master cylinder or attached to the side. We do not have a kit that works with those vehicles.

The extractor does not connect to the master cylinder, only to the brake bleed screws through plastic tubing. It draws out the fluid from the system into its tank. I also use the tubing to remove fluid from the master cylinder or power steering pump.

Their kits are meant to pressure bleed instead of suction (negative pressure) bleed. Using it the way you do basically makes it like a Mityvac bleed system. There's nothing wrong with that method though.

It makes things a lot easier especially if you have an air compressor...which I don't. :smash:

In the past , I used the Motive Power Bleeder on Volvo's, Toyota's and a Corvette. This over a period of over 5 years per vehicle. Worked like a charm, never any issues.

On my 2015 4Runner TRD , I have my garage perform the work . Heck, it's less than $150.

Suggest purchasing a brake fluid tester- they're not expensive. No need to replace /flush if the fluid is good.

dont waste money on it.. its so easy to do it on a 4runner without all these fancy tools

im glad some of you have had good experiences w/ the Motiv bleeder but from my experience the stupid top cover never locks down evenly to create a good seal.. adjust one side and the opposite side leaks vice versa

my best tool for the job, my 9 yr old that can pump his little legs to exhaustion

the rears have pumps so all you have to do is hold the brake pedal and it'll squeeze it out for you

just make sure you never let the reservoir run out

Or…make a gravity bleed bottle from an old plastic OJ bottle, a few feet of 1/4” id clear vinyl tubing, and a couple of zip ties.
Remember to keep the bottle and tubing above the bleeder and you shouldn’t have any issues with air bubbles.
Use the ABS pump to do the rears and pull all the old fluid from the master cylinder. Just allow gravity to do the work on the fronts. Takes about 30 mins each for the fronts if you don’t have a friend to pump the pedal.

I use the motive bleeder but I do NOT put fluid in it. Keeps it clean and easy. Just have to unhook it and refill the master every now and then.
