Motor dies when I let off the gas too quickly

I've had this problem for a while now. I've cleaned the MAF, throttle body, and IAC but the problem happened 3 times today. Whenever I accelerate quickly (basically, floor it) and then quickly let off the throttle completely, sometimes the truck will just die. And when I try to restart it, I usually have to restart it a couple times before it stays running again. I know that accelerating then immediately releasing the throttle is probably a terrible thing to do to the truck but I feel like it should at least be designed to handle that. Am I just asking too much of the truck or is there actually a problem that needs to be fixed?
Truck has 230K miles on it for reference.

The TPS and IAC are both suspect with those symptoms.

The TPS is easy enough to check using a basic ohm meter (an old analog one works best if you have one laying around), so then you can rule that out.

I'm curious as to how exactly you cleaned the IAC though? It doesn't respond well to being cleaned while the TB is still installed on the manifold because the TB Cleaning Spray you used probably pooled in the IAC section and now there's just gunk sitting in there, messing with the valve.

It's highly recommended that if you're gonna clean out the IAC, that you remove the TB, dismantle it and properly clean and dry the unit that way to avoid possible issues.

In other words, although you might "think" you cleaned the IAC, if you just cleaned it while everything was still installed on the engine, you could have done more harm than good.

On the flip side, if you're sure that the TB and IAC were properly cleaned as recommended, you can definitely start by looking at your TPS first.


I had a similar experience. Truck would stalled on me after flooring it and letting off the throttle. Did it to me twice and same as you, I couldn't get it started right away. Had to wait about 30 seconds before it would fire up.

All I did was clean my MAF and the I haven't had the issue since, although I suspect that my TB and IAC are due for a proper clenaing too. Just haven't bothered since cleaning the MAF did the trick for me. I've since done the WOT test a good handful of times with no adverse issues.

Good luck.. these gremlins can be a pain sometimes

Aha! That's probably my problem. I left the IAC and TB on the truck when I "cleaned" them. I'll take the TB apart and give it and the IAC a proper cleaning and probably clean the MAF too, while I'm at it.

As a side note, you never mentioned which engine or model year you have.. but can we all assume we're talking about a 5VZ-FE (3.4L V6) 3rd Gen?
 
Hey guys, wanna resurect this thread. Still having a similar issue. I cleaned the TB when it was off the truck and replaced the spark plugs and wires. The problem it's having now is that, when i'm sitting in traffic for a while, whenever i'm cruising really slow, around 15ish mph, whenever i blip the throttle, it will bog then revs up. It'll occasionally bog so bad it dies. It's also just generally pretty low on power. I changed the fuel filter and it didn't bog as often which leads me to believe it's a problem with the fuel system. I've run the tank dry twice in the past cuz i'm an idiot so i'm wondering if my fuel pump is kicking the bucket. Any ideas?
