Motor swap question... What motor?

So right now I have a 22re in my 4runner and I am not very satisfied. It us making a weird knocking noise (prob a rod) so I want it out. I want to buy a new motor to swap in. I am looking for something with more power, and either bolts up to my bell housing or does with very little mods (I only got around 1500$ to work with). So obviously it is not going to be a 4 banger. I also still have the IFS, so I can't really but something really heavy in it. Anyone know of motor or any other kind of idea to work with? Thanks

I would look into the 3.4 swap out of a tacoma, or a 4.3 out of a chevy. Your going to have to change your bell housing. and keep saving, parts add up quick.

Realistically, $1500 isn't going to do it.
Between the cost of a motor, conversion kit to adapt it, new radiator, exhaust, etc.

The price is not really an issue, I have enough to get the job done. I just didn't want ppl to tell me that I need new axles, get a big motor, etc. Honestly, I like my ifs. I don't go off road much so it's definantly worth having a smooth ride. I just want a motor that will not weigh down on my ifs and that will have more power

I would go with the toyota 3.4 v6 swap. They are good motors and there is a lot of info out there, especially on yotatech on these swaps.

Except that he has a 22RE, not a 3.0.
That doesn't make it impossible, but it makes it a lot harder swap.

x2 :iagree: to go with anything bigger than the 22re you are gonna have to change your transmission. What is the level of your fab skills? A 5.0 swap is nice and can be done relatively cheap but takes a lot of massaging. your rear axle will stand up to anything you can shoehorn in there if you drive reasonably. The 3.4 is a nice swap I have several buddys that have done them. Look for a R151f turbo trans and then the bellhousing from a 3vze and then of course the engine and your gonna have a wicked nice swap. The motor swap section over on yotatech.com is a great place to read and see what your getting into. one last thing is that a good rebuild of your 22re with head work and some goodies can make respectable power if your used to a stock 22re. I found a Tacoma and a 4runner, both wrecked, for around 2000... How easy would it be toswap motors and trannys? Both have the 3.4 with manual trannies...

The problem your going to run into is that any you can't just buy a wrecked rig and throw them in because any vehicle that has a 3.4 in it will be a drivers side drop t-case and your truck is passangers side drop. Though if you combine the engine swap with a SAS you end up with a super sweet truck. or you can get an adapter plate to mate your tcase to the new trans. though you will need to change the your tcase imput shaft to 23 spline to match the new trans. Keep reading and your gonna get there :driving: Be careful about starting down the swap road, it is steep and slippery.
