Motor swap thread

The mileage shouldn't be TOO much of a concern. Are you building a prius or a toy? I wouldn't settle for 10mpg but the 17+ you would get from a 5vz or 7m engine is reasonable in my mind.
 
I like the 3rz because its still compact and easy to work on in the engine bay. Its easily upgradable, much like the 22re, and they are relatively cheap
 
Everybody on my local board is recommending the 2.7l too. I'll be honest, I'm still not sure if that's enough power gain to justify the swap, but I opened this thread for advice and I'd be re****ed not to listen to it. I've got some more research to do now, I guess.
 
for 7m all you need is the engine bell housing and engine harness and ecu thats it no relays it uses all the 4runners power harness


only issue you have with 7m is finding 5m motor mounts unless you want to move mount location

What are your plans to make room for the radiator? Or are you going to try and shoehorn it in?
 
I have a 5VZ for sale right now. But, I'd also encourage you to look at the 3RZ too. My buddy had one in his reality stock, lifted on 33's and that ran like a raped ape. And they're IMO more bullet proof than the 5VZ and they're great for adding boost to them down the line.

I'm looking for a 1st Gen now. If I find one I'll probably keep my 5VZ and swap it eventually but only because I already have it.
 
There is one more option and that is to find a local short block and rebuild it to performance standards. 150 hp is not that hard to achieve from a 22re. 400 for a engine rebuild kit from engnbldr.com with .40 over pistons, go 1mm oversized valves and a good cam with a free flow exhaust and some port work and bada bing no swap needed. machine work will be about 1000 at a reputable shop and your good for under 1500 total. Ive built that very motor and had no problem roasting 35's.

I still vote for a motor swap if you can up pull it off. having driven a 3rz and owning a 5vze you will be happy with which ever one you go. or keep your w56 and get the bell housing for 5.0 ford or 4.3 chevy and enjoy lots of great power and torque. stock 5.0 is 225 horse and 250 ftlb tq.
 
How do you figure that getting 150hp will be under $1,500? I have a LOT more than that into my engine and I would be surprised if I have 150hp.

My list includes:
Machine work on Block: Decked .010, bored .030, hot tanked, chased threads, then machinist installed the wrist pin bearings. $500

Rebuild Kit with 268 Cam: $300

Street RV Head: $450

LCE Header: $360

Street Underdrive Kit: $200

New flor matched fuel injectors: $200

All new sensors for the efi system: ~$500

That's about $2,500 right there and I know there's a few bits here and there that I'm forgetting. My engine has no problem pushing my rig but I still would have been better off doing a motor swap and would have a lot more power than what my beefed up 22re is putting out. My next choice is to either go with forced induction with this engine or do an engine swap with a SC'd 5vz. Yes... I want more power! I can easily maintain 80 on the freeway but it's still a n/a 4 cyl engine that's putting out 150 hp MAX, but probably more in the 140 area.
 
the radiator will fit where its stock location is. its just a little tight
some people cut and move it forward for more room to get belts and stuff on

Im not saying you can't spend more but I don't think you have to. But you missed where I said that I vote for a swap. :driving: I have a supercharged 3.4 and it is sweet. Im still putting a v8 in my 1st gen:beer:

Here is what got me turned on to this as a viable swap for my trucks (copied from MarlinCrawler that was copied from Pirate):

I have raced a Turbo 22R-TE, a 3.0 V6, and a 3.4 V6 up the same steep grade on HWY168 up to Shaver Lake, and I can pull all over the Turbo and the 3.0, and slowly distance myself from the 3.4. Seriously. When you think about it, the 3.4 only has 25% more horsepower than the 2.7, and that's apparently not enough to cover the extra weight of the newer trucks (as my truck only weighs about 3300 lbs).

As for the 3RZ swap, I could go on for days talking about this topic.

But I want to scare you first. It will cost you roughly $1500 to complete the swap, if not more. Figure about $800 - $1200 for an engine complete with all wiring harnesses and ecu, and an extra $300 - $500 or so for the misc things you will need during the conversion.

As for wiring, the 22R-E would be much easier since you won't have to do any wiring. Your chassis and body are already setup for the 22R-E harness, so you can just basically keep the looming intact and just install it into your truck (as I see you have a 2nd gen truck). The hardest thing would be working on the interior and ignition. You would have to remove your dash and place the new looming into place. I am talking about having a complete 100% harness with all sensors and everything, including the ignition..

As for the 3RZ, I have complete notes for the 1st gen and 3rd generations of the 3RZ (1995-1997 & 2001(?)-2004), I just need to get them up online for everyone to enjoy..

But even with the wiring notes, it will be a lot of wiring and soldering and heat shrinking to do the job correctly. I will not pretend to tell people that this is a cake job. Even for me, sure it's cake because I've done it a couple of times, but its still gonna take me a couple of days to get it finished.

But let me tell you, the rewards from the 3RZ are OUT STANDING. Sometimes when I've raced a moderately modified 22R-E setup, I feel like "If I loose this race, it's going to be REALLY embarrassing considering all of the work that Ive done" but then I just realize, how could someone build a NA 22R-E engine that could out perform a 22R-TE engine? NO WAY! At least nothing that would be a daily driver, it would be some special machine for sure, and then I remember, well geeze! my 3RZ IS BONE STOCK!!!!! What if I put the same amount of work into my engine! Holy Crap- So It is soooo amazing to have a completely stock engine, thats completely stock Toyota reliable, makes over 20 mpg on the highway, and has more power than both the Turbo 22R and the 3.0 V6, and it is all so Light weight, works with a lightweight drivetrain, has NO clutter under the hood, and is smog legal (here in Cali).

If I had to do this again, I would never even think about anything else than the 3RZ. Not in a million years.

In fact, this last weekend we just took Bevin's truck out for a test drive for the first time, and this is the 2nd fastest 3RZ truck Ive driven. His truck is really fast!! And he is so happy with the 3RZ that he has already bought a 1963 Toyota Stout, and we are looking for yet another 3RZ to swap into the Stout and convert it to a 4WD. Pretty cool stuff man

I've been considering this as a viable solution when my 22re gives up. Sure, i could just spend $400 and relatively few hours putting another 22re in, but where's the fun in that? From what i've gathered, the 3rz, as it comes mated to a W59, will accept a W56, is easy to mount, relatively easy to wire, and does everything moderately better than a 22re.

How many man hours would you say your swap took? And what surprise expenses came up? I was figuring i could do this for $1000 or under, if i got the motor for ~$4-800.

I view the 22re (and IFS) as the weak points of my yota, i feel like with a SAS and different engine, i'd never be able to get rid of her.
 
I am torn but, unless I find a simple diesel swap, I will likely go to a 3RZ over a 22RE rebuild. The 3RZ has 150 HP stock, the weight of a 22RE, likely better fuel economy and full OBD II diagnostics. Plus it's still a Toy. I would consider a VW or Mercedes diesel swap but they're a distant second.

T3/T4 turbo, thats a big ass turbo, wont even boost til like 4500 RPM...

Had one on my old eclipse, back in the day.

it's not THAT big... I didn't look at the trim though. I have a 57 trim on my Mazda and that's a 2.2 sohc. starts to pull hard at 3200rpm. love it.

oh yeah something I thought I'd mention about sv's build... its not built for horsepower! he wouldn't have the RV head or cam if it was.
