I rely on a stream light stinger rechargeable LED flash light.

wow this exact thought just popped into my head a few seconds before I came across this.

simple, wire one to switched power. key off it doesn't charge, it would charge the rest of the time though. I keep a stinger in my glove box. this would be perfect.

The beauty of these beasts goes beyond their massive lighting ability--in a pinch, you can even use one as a light-duty hammer and not harm it! Great for self-defense, too (ouch). As for the lighting, I remember helping out a co-worker once, working on a vehicle after sunset, and he had this pitiful cheap flashlight. I grabbed my Mag, hit the switch, and suddenly instead of a small spot being lit up, you could see the whole vehicle clearly! Love 'em.

yup. 5D cell maglite mounted under the seat in most of our vehicles. used it to work on cars at night, but also can be used as a hammer, if you take out the batteries we used it as an extension on a tire iron to break loose a stubborn lug nut, and it's long enough to bang on a stubborn starter and start a stranded truck.

and yes, if used properly, makes an effective weapon. 5D version is a bit heavy and requires a bit more space to utilize or swing, but gives you a little extra reach to "reach out and touch someone".

Oh, and it's probably not the greatest flashlight for self defense. For that, I have these: an Asp collapsible baton and an old-school, side-handled PR-24 that I was issued back in the day.

you could also mount the X Cape bezel cap on the maglite to further "weaponize" it.

for closer contact, we have small, handheld CREE lights with bezels in the door pockets or glove boxes. if you sharpen the bezels further and then repaint them black, you really can't tell the difference between stock and modded (sharpened) bezels. if used properly, can be an effective deterrent and leaves a rather unique "cookie cutter" wound.

ASP batons also secured under door armrests on our vehicles, and pepper spray in the center consoles in case someone approaches wife's T4R (5D is way too big and heavy for wife to effectively use in close quarters or even taking full swings).
