SPOD install battery hookup question

Hey guys im finally getting around to hooking up my SPOD, i have a power tray its mounting on. SPOD instructions say hook up red lead from SPOD directly to Positive terminal on battery, then for negative it says DO not hook up directly to negative terminal of battery but instead hook up to a chassis ground bolt somewhere under hood.

THen ive seen a few online videos of the install with some hooking directly the negative cable to the battery and not to a chassis ground. SPOD says doing this could damage CAN BUS system.

Any idea what is the right way to do it?

Hook negative direct to battery or

Hook negative direct to chassis ground


I figured I better ask before i pour the first beverage....and ideally not ride the lightening!!!

for the purposes of the SPOD, grounding to the 4runner battery or chassis ground will both work

the negative terminal on the battery has a short run to the chassis. the negative terminal on any modern car today will have a short and good connection (good continuity) to the chassis right near the fender. I would follow the instructions SPOD tells you and use the chassis ground or basically where the negative terminal connects to the frame (I've used that point)

if you were installing electronics that ran to your trunk area you wouldn't want to run a long wire back to the battery and you'd ground as close as reasonably possible to the frame in the trunk. but because your SPOD is in the engine bay and the battery negative terminal and chassis ground spots are so close to the each other it won't matter

my arb compressor is wired to the battery negative, so is my icom ham radio. that's what the instructions state. my ditch lights are ground to the chassis as per their instructions. my trailer brake is grounded near the drivers kick panel, never had an issue with any of them

YEah from what ive seen online seems to be half use the negative terminal on the battery and the other half the frame chassis ground.

Ive got room to reach both easy. Decisions decisions.. thanks for the post btw.
