Mounting acc fuse box on top of fuse box

Why am i seeing everyone fab up fancy cutting boards and plexi glass to mount their accessory fuse boxes when the top of the engine fuse box would be a perfect spot and already available? Its literally right next to the battery and you don't need to do any extra work except for drilling a few quick holes into plastic and it's even big enough to fit a 12 circuit blue sea box and a relay. Is there a reason you wouldn't want to mount a box there other than its 'not as strong as a cutting board' or 'you don't want holes in the plastic cover or your engine will blow'?

Personally, I think it's a horrible idea. If/when you need to get to your factory fusebox the last thing you want to do is deal with a bunch of wires on the lid before accessing the inside.

And- the lid could pop off with the extra weight and short out against something.

To get into the fuse box, you would only need to undo the DC side as the lid flips back and open. I can't really picture the lid falling off and going anywhere unless you give your battery leads too much slack. Even then, seems a little far fetched that the lid is going to go very far... Thanks for the perspective.

Aux Fuse Box

I have a Blue Sea aux fuse box mounted on the OEM fuse box and it works just fine. I had the same set up in my FJ for nearly 10-years and never had an issue with it (basically same engine bay). I just give myself some extra play in the wires leading to the Blue Sea and it is fine. The few times you have to access the fuses underneath makes it a good option. And you are correct - it seems like an easy location.

Thanks. Seems like a much more logical option than bolting a cutting board into a wheel well... (No offense [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION]... a lot of what you do is ingenious.)

j/k'ing aside, I prefer mine to bolting it atop the fuse box lid...It interferes with nothing and it looks cleaner. IMHO

I've done a lot of ghetto mods, lol. The fusebox on the cutting board isn't one of them though. It's safe and effective. Bolting a fusebox onto a fusebox lid gets the ghetto vote in this case.

Either way- it doesn't really bother me- just stating my reasoning/opinion.

Well, I mounted a blue sea acr on top of the factory fuse box. I tried to use the Shrockworks battery tray/acr mount but Toyota changed some things in the 2016 enough to make their product not work. Speaking of which I should probably get that shipped back to them.

I use 3M Dual Lock type velcro and it works excellent, no play from the "fuzzy" side that you get with normal velcro. I used a terminal stud fuse and with the way it wires up it's just one bolt to disconnect to get the factory fuse lid off. I played around with the cutting board material but it was going to be harder to service tucked in where it was, namely cause I've got a second in-line fuse after the acr, and a battery disconnect switch for my winch. Needless to say it was getting cluttered under there and this method worked for now, but I'm not opposed to changing it if something better comes along. I should really start a build thread.

Well, as bad an idea as it is, I am definitely guilty of doing this.

This is my current temporary setup. However, it is only attached with 3M Foam Tape (the stuff from my GoPro). I will be moving it to a platform once I rig one up. For now it works well, is very sturdy, and I can access all the fuses and relays beneath it without issue. The biggest thing to remember when doing this? All wires need to be long enough or flexible enough to open the fuse/relay panel. Wiring all from one side helps tremendously.
