In preparation for a pending (~7/21) addition to the family, I've gone ahead and mounted a rear facing infant child seat in the center rear of my 2005 4Runner (non-LATCH). My question is to those of you with these Graco infant seats that snap in and out of base units: I've mounted the base unit in, cinched it down, had it inspected by the local fire station with no issues, but over the course of the last few days, it seems that the tension in the shoulder belt has caused the base to no longer sit level (it's currently just the base, not the whole seat). It's riding up on the passenger side. Anyone else seen this issue - should I be worried about this, or will it go away with the extra weight of the seat to hold it in place?

The Graco base should have it's own straps that hook onto 2 concealed fastening points tucked inside the lower seat cushions on driver/pass side. You shouldn't have to use the seatbelt on an 05 4runner, just the included straps and you want them as tight as you can pull them. You also might have to use something to get the seat properly level. I used styrofoam pool noodles cut down to size placed to the rear to get it perfectly level. The local State Police barracks had someone trained in car seats install them for me and trust me these things aren't going anywhere. Ours is an 05 as well.

You're right if this was a LATCH child seat, but it's a borrowed unit for short term use (have one purchased by in-laws from out of town arriving after the baby comes - this is essentially just to get home from the hospital) that's a year old and does not feature LATCH straps. I'm looking for any advice related to non-LATCH mounting...

Let me make sure that I understand what you are saying. You are pputting a rear facing Graco car seat in your truck and you are not using the latch system so you have to use the seatbelt which goes through the spaces provided so you can buckle the bace in. After your tighten it it is leaning to one side? If this is correct it is 100% normal. I have a 9 month old and ened up re-tightning the base once a week so it wouldn't lean so much. I hope this helps.

I had the same issue... I think just constantly tightening and re-checking is the only solution. Make sure you put your bodyweight into it if needed.
The latch stuff is excellent, go with that at the first opportunity.

you shouldn't put the seat in the middle, the reason being that in an accident the armrest/cupholder can slam down on the infant's legs and feet (this was told to me by the local firehouse). best place, apparently, is behind the passenger seat.
if you are having the problem of the shoulder strap cinching the seat up on one side, go to babies 'r' us and pick up an "h" clip. should be a buck or two. follow the installation instructions and you shouldn

yes, you must use the H clip when using the belt. the graco base we used has an level adjustment underneath to work in almost any vehicle...but trust me when I tell you, using the latch system is the best route.
