Mounting options for Yakima Towers

I'm getting ready to pick up my '97 SR5 that has factory rack and crossbars on it. I am planning on removing the factory crossbars and using my Yak rack (currently on my Saab).

I have rain gutter mounts for the towers, but I was wondering if it would be better to get mounts that can use the factory rails.

Does anyone have experience putting on Yakima towers and crossbars on their Runner?

After some more online research, I've determined I have the Q Towers, and if I want to mount to the existing tracks, I need the Control Towers.

So, anyone mount these via the Q Towers, and how did that work for placement? Since I'll be carrying a 15' Kayak on top, having the crossbars centered in the middle of the vehicle would be the most advantageous.

I'm currently looking at getting either a Yakima or Thule rack setup.

I was told that for Yakima you will need the Control Towers as well as Landing Pad #1 for each tower

My understanding is that you are correct - if you are mounting them to the factory rails.

If you are mounting to the door jam you can use QTowers.
