At some point over the last couple of months I saw that a member had installed PIAA's or HELLA's upside down under the hood so that they would be behind the grill. I am curious if anyone else has done this and/or what everyone's thoughts are? My biggest concern is how it affects air flow to the radiator.

Installing lights behind the grille will work mostly for look. I checked my lower grille and found that it blocks ~40% of a light. So, you can do it if the light output and pattern is not important as styling.
The best thing is install the lights like momo.75 did (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?threadid=6027) or as I did (see my avatar) on a grille guard. Just my 2c.
