Hey all,
Funny little turn of events.... This summer I traded in my tired 2002 Honda Civic coupe for a 2004 Honda CR-V because I planned on moving to Anchorage, Alaska. I really, really, wanted a 4Runner, but my dad has a mysterious Honda fetish and he was helping pay for it, so that was his sphere of influence. I was not really in a position to fight it... after all he (on behalf of the family) owns a 98' accord, 2000 odessy, 2010 accord crosstour... and you can't forget the lawnmower XD. I drove the CR-V over 4000 miles from Phoenix, AZ to Anchorage in June... ended up messing up my evap canister and wiring harnesses on a dirt road in British Columbia. Totally mucked up the undercarriage, which cost a few grand in repairs. The car chugged to a halt just outside of Whitehorse, in the Yukon Territory, and I had to rent a small V8 uhaul van in Whitehorse with a flatbed trailer to tow the broken CR-V across the last stretch of Alaska highway into Anchorage for repairs.
About a month after I got it all fixed up, a friend of mine came up to visit, and totaled it. He is a horrible driver and managed to flip it 5 times going 75mph on the Parks Highway in denali state park. I was unbuckled (lapse of judgement) laying down on the back floor and got ejected on a subsequent roll through a side window.
As the photo suggests, I was OK. Chances would dictate that I'd be dead, or horribly disabled, though. I am fine! I landed on my back in the dirt on the side of the highway. They strapped me to a board and took me to the hospital. All of the xrays came back clean, and I hobbled out of the hospital the same night. Didn't even take any pain meds!
I had a 2010 F-150 as my interim rental-car, which was actually a pretty boss ride. Then FINALLY, it happened! I replaced the wreck with a 2005 white 4Runner V6 SR5 4X4. It has 35,000mi on it, and I paid $20,000 upfront from a private seller. I had a trusted mechanic look at it pre-purchase and it is in almost perfect shape.
I gotta say, this is absolutely my favorite ride... this last week has seen Anchorage's first snowfall (11 inches this weekend!) and this thing is a BEAST! I purchased some mastercraft studded snow tires and they seem to work well. Glad to be a part of this forum!
