mpg difference '04 vs '05 V8 Sport

This question may have been asked before but is there any mpg difference between the old version (iForce) of the v8 vs the newer version of the v8 (vvti)? I know Horsepower went up 35 between the years...just wondering if the mileage dropped inaccordance with it...some sweet deals on used v8 Sports here in Denver...thanks. Only a few hundred dollars difference in price. I'm thinking the '05 White Sport would be cool, then I look at the gray '04...hmmmm

From a spec sheet i looked at, it looks like the newer VVT-i model V8's lost some torque? It had 320ft-tq on 03-04 but now 306 on 05+? Im thinking it might be from that revised SAE ratings but still wierd. HP is defintely up though....all the 05+ V8 4runners were out of my price range so i settled for a 03 Limited.

Is VVTI an alluminum block? If it is I'd get it. I do not like the idea of Cast Iron block (that I-Force is) and other metalls such as alloy heads joining. They tend to expand at different rate, thus causing leaks later in life.

No, there's no loss in power for the VVT-i V8 or the V6. The 306ft-lbs of torque and 260hp are conforming to the new 2006 SAE standards. The power is the same, but rated differently.

For an apples to apples comparison, the (2003-04) non VVT-i V8 is 235hp @ 4800rpm and 320ft-lbs @ 3400rpm. The VVT-i V8 is 270 hp @ 5400rpm and 330ft-lbs @ 3400rpm of torque with the old SAE ratings (old rating method that was used for 2005 and prior).

There should be a sticky about 2006 SAE ratings.

Not entirely true, even with cast aluminum blocks there are iron sleeves in it and the 2 materials do expand at different rates, depending if the 2UZ is a open deck design or a closed deck type like SR20 engines from Nissan. Open deck design is good for cooling the heads but notorious for cylinder walk and leakage in high hp applications since its not a closed deck design. For high power applications a block gaurd in open deck design is usually placed to closed off the open tops, this is why closed deck iron is almost always a better choice then a open deck aluminum. Most newer alloy blocks are die cast instead of sand casted for superior accuracy in bore centering and since less material is used in die casting the overall weight is much less then a sand casted aluminum block or a iron one. I prefer the good ol' closed deck iron over aluminum blocks, weight is not a big concern to me compared to a rigid iron block.

After a closer look at the 2UZ they are all iron block closed deck designs weather its VVT-i or Normal I-force, the only aluminum V8's are the ones used in Lexus cars like the 1UZ and the 3UZ.

That used to be true, which is the reason why so many heads and blocks used to fail. Now they figured out that by using steel sleeves and gaskets they can join different allows or have an aluminum block without the risk of heat expansion issues. The only toyota engine with an aluminum block is the 4.0 V6 on the tacoma and 4runner. Lexus has the aluminum V8's. Even the newer 5.7 L is still an iron block I believe.

To answer the orginal question....no, no noticeable mileage difference.

You want the 05+ motor....the non-vvti motor was great too, but fell off a bit on the top end. The newer version pulls hard all the way to redline.

Ok, thanks for the reply that there's no real difference. I did download the pdfs explaining the technical differences on the two engines. Cool stuff...

The best deals I've seen south of Denver have been at Ralph Schomp on Broadway. They have 3 '04's and 1 '05 that I've been thinking about...plus they are great to deal with.
