MPG on your 3rd Gen?

Most are v6 with some brimg I4. My mpg in v6 is between 13 to 17mpg. The trucks and sub are not mpg mobiles. If after that, need light cars and hybrids.....

Mine is a 3.4 V6 and it gets about 12 mpg.

I've thrown more parts into it that haven't made a difference yet, but I'm an idiot, so I'll keep failing until I don't.

I highly doubt you're an idiot. If you are lifted you'll have lower than average MPG as it loses whatever aerodynamics it had left and if you have larger than stock tires you're actually getting higher than what reads on the odometer. Can be off as much as 20% depending on tire size.

There just isn't much on these engines to improve MPG. Older generations has all sorts of inefficiencies in the intake, fuel delivery and exhaust that could be improved. Not so much on these 3rd gens.

I used to get gas from Sam's and then a station opened near me which beats the Sams gas price. At Sam's 4R used to get best at 12.5 but with the gas from the new station, 4R received 13.6. All readings are 100% city.

Hey all Ok thanks a lot guys, didn't mean to beat a dead horse just trying to get actual numbers as I was seeing people claiming "24mpg" and all and was wondering what was the deal with my 4runner. Meh just a few extra bucks at the tank but at least I'm still cruising around in 4runner! Beats the wifes golf anyday (puke)! Thanks all for contributing!

I just did a long trip in my 98 SR5 with 255 K miles, an AT and 4x4 with 265 tires. I averaged between 23 and 24.5 mpg, used CC and drove the speed limit from 45 to 70 mph. This was my first trip after I replaced everything that needed maintenance which was everything. The truck had a lot of CELs and believe it or not the original TB and even spark plugs! How it still ran was a mystery. I drive a camry and corolla for their stirling mpg but if I can get over 20 mpg with this heavy 4R I will drive it instead. The previous owner said he got from 18-20 on avg hwy. I stay under 70 always to save on fuel and wear and tear. Dy Dodge Cummins gets 15-16 mpg at 70-75 mph but increases to 21-22 at 60-65 just from air resistance.

Typically get about 17 mpg city in my 98 6cyl SR5 automatic.
