There are a lot of threads about mileage on here... But just took a trip to Isle of Palms near Charleston, S.C. Its a 233 mile journey and I am proud to report that the 4Runner averaged 19.8 miles per gallon. Filled the gas tank up on my way out of the neighborhood Wednesday morning and didn't re-fill till Thursday afternoon when we left. Like usual the empty light was on, but the gas tank would only take 13.18 gallons. Had three adults and my one year old in the car and a ton of luggage due to the baby. But either way just wanted to report the my findings. Around the house I only get around 16-17 mpg. So I was excited to get almost 20 mpg on the trip both ways.

19.8 was almost exactly what I got combined on my last trip of almost 8000 miles, although was also carrying at least 800lbs in the back.
The ONLY thing that has helped my MPG at all in the past 2 years was changing my muffler from stock to a magnaflow then to the Borla and the stock intake to a AiRaid intake and filter.

Let me know what you uncover, would you please?! So far I've done a tune-up replacing plugs, coil wires (the good ones that y'all recommended - Thanks, btw!), and even threw in a new ignition coil for good measure :/
Replacing both O2 sensors in the next week or so - time for new brakes, too Raybestos pads and rotors (or?).
Thoughts, suggestions, and parts brands recommendations will get you 2 cookies!

It's funny I found this thread, I just did a trip from upstate SC to Siesta Key, FL and averaged around 16mpg (Low-15.8, high-16.8) on the highway with cruise at about 65 and just driving around down there got a touch over 18mpg. None of that is exact, but I don't think it is too bad considering a lift and 33/12.50s. Plus if I factored in the size difference, it should be a little higher. Also, on my annual trip to Glamis, CA, with a bike on a hitch carrier, 4wheeler on a trailer and loaded down with gear, I was around 14-15 if I remember right. Very low, but all things considered, not bad! Didn't mean to thread-jack, just chiming in.

im averaging this summer around 19.5-21 mpg but when i get 21 mpg its like 90% interstate and when i get the 19.5 its 80% interstate.... So upsetting seeing how many miles im putting on her in such a short amount of time. :sobbing:

:bigok: This is about where I am with 250K on the clock. I make a trip from Abq to Taos once every 2-3 weeks, usually in the 85 mph range for most of the trip.

How was this possible? are you super smooth on the throttle? Is it the manual trans? What make model and size of tires? What tire pressure do you run? How much cargo were you carrying? reg mid or premium gas?

To answer your questions, I don't recall trying to be smooth with the throttle. I do drive it like an old lady, I rarely get over 3K rpm. I do have the manual trans, and I believe that helps. At that time, I was running stock size Michelin LTX M/S at somewhere around 37 psi. I was running fairly heavy that trip, my son and I (around 300 lbs combined) and enough camping gear for a 4 day camp (probably another 300 lbs?). I only run 85 octane gas.
A couple things that I think contributed to the results:
We took the scenic route, through RMNP, Granby, Kremmling, Steamboat, etc. I would guess average speed through the first portion was 55mph. From Steamboat west, we set the cruise at 65mph. 55 to 65mph seems to be the sweet spot for this truck.
The other, and probably larger, factor was driving through the mountains. I think the ratio of extra fuel spent climbing versus the extra fuel saved descending worked in our favor, especially with the low gearing of the standard transmission 4runners (I'm at 3200 rpm at 75mph). Vernal UT and Fort Collins are within a couple hundred feet of each other in altitude, so I climbed and descended the same amount. I'm guessing on numbers here, but if I got 10mpg climbing and 40 mpg descending, my net mileage would be greater than normal. I average 21 mpg driving to and from work.
