I have a theory here. How old are all of you? I could be wrong, but that is why they call it a theory lol.

30. No highway driving for me, all backroads. That is mainly what is contributing to my fuel mileage.

55 to 65mph seems to be the sweet spot for this truck.

I got 10mpg climbing and 40 mpg descending, my net mileage would be greater than normal. I average 21 mpg driving to and from work.

Yup,keeping it at 2500 RPMs or less gives me the best mileage too. While my commute isn't through any mountains there are a quite a bit of descents, and I'm able to drive safely at 55 or less on the drive home since there's almost no traffic past 2 AM.

I just recorded 15.3mpg towing my boston whaler (1,880lbs) on a 230 mile trip from NJ to Alexandria, Va. I stayed at about 65mph

I average about 14 MPG highway and in town. I have done so much crap to try and improve mileage but have ZERO luck....

Break in secret to better MPG

Yes, this is a theory which I have proven over many vehicles. If you set the pistons by breaking in a vehicle with harder driving in the first thousand miles (quicker starts to 3000 RPM) it will perform better with greater efficiency. In other words, don't baby these beasts! Welcome weighing in with your opinions.

Not sure I follow you. The majority of us were not the original owners of our 4Runners, so most of us didn't do the breaking in of the motor.

100% gas (ethanol free) makes a big difference in my mileage. My Yakima roof rack consistently knocks off a couple MPGs on the highway, so I take it off if I know I'll be going on the interstate. I run 245/75/16 Cooper AT3 tires. They're the same height as stock, slightly narrower, and look good. On summer gas I can get 22mpg on the highway (can get more if I cut my speed to 65mph). Winter gas I definitely notice my mileage go down.
