Our box-shaped SUVs have so much wind resistance as well as airflow under the vehicle that adding more wind resistance doesn't kill MPG's much worse than it already is. Regular maintenance is key like you are experiencing.
I've tried many, many tricks and tips over the years to try and maximize MPG's as I used to put a lot of miles on it each year as my daily driver. Has not really done much, only slight improvements of less than <1MPG on the items I measured. On older Toyotas and the 4 cylinder 3RZ there's more to be gained. Despite all the fuel hungry power adders I have put on my engine, I still get 19 MPG on trips up and down the Sierras and into Nevada from 200 ft to 7200 ft elevation. Helps that I can just cruise down I-80 with no throttle input for a long time on the way home!
