MT 255/85r17 Tires

Hi team,

Anyone here running Mickey Thompson’s new 255/85r17 Baja Boss?

These are tall skinny (35x10) tires and seem to be a good alternative to traditional 34/35s as they’d have less weight, rolling resistance, and rubbing. A few FJ people have tried them and raved about them on FJ forum.

Thoughts / experience welcome.

No never had those tires but I have 3 255/80R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers ready to go on my 4Runner. Still waiting on the last one to be delivered. Looks like hopefully tomorrow.

I am figuring the lower weight and narrower tire might help out with miles per gallon issues

Yes, MPG is definitely something to consider too. I get 15-16mpg on a good day with 33s. There are guys who run 40s on a ram power wagon, which weights 2,000 lbs more and has a 6 liter v8, and they get the same mileage.

These are an interesting option. At 64# though they aren't especially light. And honestly most sizes are almost prohibitively heavy compared to a similar sized tire. I wonder how a tire that heavy rides? Other big downside to this size is the widest approved rim size is 8"

They also have better gearing and 8 or 10 speed transmissions so that V8 is barely idling most of the time.

That’s part of the appeal. I like stock wheels and they are 7 inches wide. While I can mount 315s on it, not many shops will take that job. 64 pounds is exactly what KO2s weigh in 315’s. Another benefit is that 255s won’t rub on the UCA, so you don’t need spacers or special offset to clear them.

Resurrecting this thread - wondering if OP went with the 255/85/17 tires, and what mods if any were done to the 5th gen 4R for fit.

I'm considering this for 2021 4R TRD ORP. I've always preferred narrower tall tires for the type of off-roading I do.

I have these tires. I think they are pretty great. Good wet traction, good off road, decent in the snow. I did still end up doing a lot of trimming to make them fit. Biggest downside is the truck is basically just a 4 speed now. Overdrive actually makes my mileage worse. I need to regear, hopefully this year. I'm averaging 14 mpg, riding around in 4S all the time.

This is good to know! I am planning on going with this size. I am hoping a tune will hold off the regear for awhile. Do you think it would help? I currently have 255/80 Wildpeaks and highway driving isn't too much of a chore.

Thanks for the update! I figured a regear would be needed. Was wondering if the body mount chop was still needed with this tire size.

Depend son off-set. I have TRD wheels with spidertrax spacers. total offset is about -28mm. I needed an aggressive BMC and I needed to trim an inch off the front fender arch. I still rub on the tub when she really flexes. If you are closer to a 0 or -10mm off-set, you might have an easier time.
