Mud Scoop (Front Skid Plate)

I went to go get my oil changed the other day, and it took over an hour because the mechanic had to knock out a good bit of hard, dry dirt that had built up under the front skid plate. It really acts like a mud scoop with the holes, and open front. Guess I just need a lift to keep that thing out of the mud better.

I'm not a real fan of that front skid plate. First time out I hit a rock which bent it! It is much thinner than the skid plate on my ole 88 Pathfinder. Thought Toyota would make this thing in such a way as not to gather mud or dent that easily.

Get used to it. If you lift it you will just go through deeper mud and irt anyhow :

The stock skid plates are not the best, but they have worked pretty wel for me. Mine are all bruised and bend now, but at leastthey have protetcted the vital components. Tehy are probably good enough for most use, but if you do lots of trails plan on replaceing them with beefier aftermarket ones. Unfortunately there are no aftermarket ones yet, apart from Downey I think. Most of the skids out there are custom made.

Also if you lift the 4R a little you will find your front skids dont get hit that often anymore, but rather you gas tank skid.

I notice you mention "Black Magic Fabrications" in your signature. Any details (part #'s, prices, location, website?) and any pics of them off the truck (before the install?)

Yeah they're some garage operation in Irvine, CA with 2 guys. $140 for both skidplates cuz they had never done 4 gens before. I dont have any pictures of pre-install because I wasn't there when they did it. I'll take some closeup pics so you guys can see the steel tubing on the inside.

I see you removed the secondary air filter. Is it easy and how did you do it? Does it pull straight out?

I think he's talking the real skid plate not the faux Tacoma aluminum version which also appeared on the '02 Runner Sport.

Newbie question here, but it occurs to me that underbody armor might be a real alternative (maintain road cornering, re-sale value, etc) for moderate offroading compared to lifting.

I see you removed the secondary air filter. Is it easy and how did you do it? Does it pull straight out?

Heh heh.... yeah about that... You have to pry an edge out with a screwdriver, then once you can grab a hold of a side, just rip it out. there's like 6 tabs holding it in--you have to just break em free.

I just think of it as a mud mask thats keeping my 4Runner young, look at all the places that sell mud or the high priced places which wrap you in mud, let you take a mud bath.
