M/Ts are louder than most (if not all) A/Ts. There is no way around this...don't listen to other people who say that their M/T is as quiet as an A/T. Bullshit.
So, with that out of the way, different M/Ts make different levels of noise. Some make a whole lot...others not as much.

My Firestone Destination M/T is considered to be one of the more highway-friendly M/T, according to reviews across the net. It is definitely noisier than my old BFG AT KO, no doubt about it. My brother's Jeep Rubicon has had both BFG M/T and Goodyear MT/R. I believe that the Firestones are quieter than the BFG M/Ts, and possibly a bit quieter than the MT/Rs.
Although the Firestones are noisier than BFG AT KO, the noise is easily tolerable. My wife has made no comments on it nor has noticed the change in tire (a good thing!). It gets more noticeable over coarse pavement.
And remember, most M/Ts don't do well on ice or slick surfaces. They don't perform as well as A/T on the road due to less surface area contact and lack of siping (in most M/Ts). They do well in snow where it can dig down and claw thru deep snow better than most A/Ts (from what i have read). Although M/Ts may do better in resisting hydroplaning, they don't do well in the rain as a general rule.
BUT, the tradeoff is the significant improvement in off-road performance. There is no comparison between Firestone M/Ts (or any M/Ts for that matter) and my old BFG AT KO. And it is just not in mud where the M/Ts are better. The M/Ts perform better on rocks where the huge lugs grab rocks easier. With the exception of BFG AT KO (and other extreme A/Ts), the M/Ts can also handle low PSI better when you air down. M/Ts are heads and shoulders above A/Ts in mud and rocks IMHO. The only place where M/Ts would do worst is in sand.
Overall, being an AT guy for most of my SUV ownership (4runner and now G500), i can tell you that i won't be switching back to A/T tire anytime soon.
