Mud!!??

Okay...Where i've had to park is now a MUD lot....and over the last few days I've noticed an odd sound when i shift into reverse. could the two be connected? I just had the undercarriage washed, but still heard it. I'm still under warranty, but hoping this is something simple.

BTW...07 4runner

Any ideas? I really just noticed it today, not sure if i've heard it before. I know I'm not describing the sound, but it's kinda soon.

( I suffer from the mistaken delusion that if i can catch it early enough it won't cost as much...cracks my mechanic up since it doesnt work, but he does like and get my descriptions...LOL)

Is there just a noise? Is it in the cabin? Or the Transmission? Or the engine? Front or rear?Does it only happen when you stick it in Reverse? how about the other gears?

LOL...I am a DudeEtte.....It's only been a day or so...since the MUD parking. Reverse only so far.... I hate to say this but it sounds like an old OLDer car of mine sounded when the U-joint was going....not exactly a 'CLUNK"... from the engine, underneath...which to me is trans, but I am a GIRL..what do I know>>>,,,LOL... I really don't think it's a trans thing though. I guess i need to observe it for a few more days, but like I said...i suffer from the delusion that if i catch it soon enough it will be cheaper to fix...LOL

Actually, the truck is due for an oil change...and so I'll have all fluids checked as well as other stuff???...this could just be routine .... for trucks????

The front & rear driveshaft should have some grease fittings. Make sure they service those too when they do the oil change. That may help with the noise.

so...Today i shifted it back and forth a few times....have not heard the noise. Everything seems to be fine. Maybe it was my teen daughter...maybe she dropped her make up bag and that was the "CLUNK" I heard...LOL...

What kinds of maint do I need with an oil change....24K miles? I am assuming check fluids, but there's lots of stuff on this truck...more places to be lubed and fluid-ed.

Sorry for the false alarm. Maybe the mud all fell off from a ...um...someplace..somewhere.

Thanks Chris...I'm purty sure I know what the drive shaft is, but then i'm stumped...LOL. I'll make sure that's taken care of.

I plan on skipping "womens night" at jiffy lube in favor of MY mechanic...LOL...he may just fall over in a dead faint if I ask him to grease the fittings you mentioned....that'll be fun...LOL

Me too

Everytime I reverse out of my garage I hear a clunk (sounds like it is coming from my undercarriage/tire area). I fear I may have shifted/tweaked some kind of suspension piece when I go buckwild in the sand.

Because I park in a covered garage, I can hear it well because there is somewhat of an echo.

Anyone want to try diagnose?

Here's a guess - Brake pads clunking when in reverse. Common issue. This is not a problem, just a noise caused by the brake pads shifting around.

you should try driving through the mudlot as fast as you can in 2wheel drive, and then again at 4lo.

That should do it.

This is good to know since i've heard that as well. Since I've heard it in most of my cars, and they've never exploded, I always figured it was a normal-ish thing.

Don't feel bad. One of my rear backup lights stopped working last week. A few days later I found some time to look at it. When I flicked the switch, all's fine. Not a problem since. Go figure.

Keep in mind if you hear a weird sound, try to find out when it happens and when it does not, where it is coming from. Inside;outside, front or back. Often riding in the back seat or with the windows down helps. Also learning how to imitate the sound is good for the mechanic or the members of the board.

Click and Clack (NPR) are excellent at diagnosing a problem by the person making the sound. LOL.

That's what I'm doing now...sometimes I hear it, sometimes not....and it's a pretty small sound so i'm trying to isolate where it's coming from.

Are Click and clack the car guys? I wub them, but usually miss the show.
