Muffler Advise

I need a new muffler soon. I have a couple of questions. I am leaning towards a Magnaflow/Flowmaster. Which ones quieter?
I have Flowmasters on my mustang, so I don't want LOUD.
Should I go with an 18" or 24". I know the longer the quieter?
Also besides doing it yourself, did you guys buy the muffler you wanted and take it to the muffler shop or did you have them do everything? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

My understanding is that Magnaflow is quieter. Flowmaster is sort of designed to be loud (I think). I got an 18 Magnaflow because I wanted sound but not super loud at highway speeds for when I"m on long trips. I am happy with mine. The 24 would be very quite, subtle. I like to hear a bit of engine growl. Sometimes I wish I would have gone with a louder 14, but then I hear guy's drive past and think that would be so loud all the time that it would get annoying. To each his own.

I got mine from the internet and then had a shop weld it on. I would imagine it's cheaper to shop for it yourself.

You can check You Tube for sound/video clips of mufflers to help narrow down your search. There are a couple 4runners on there. Good luck.

I alrady have a K & N CAI. Do you guys have the Magnaflow part#'s for the 18" Muffler? Is the pipe diameter 2.25" or 2.5"?
And what about offsets? Any info. would help. Good ideas guys.

For my '97 I put on MAGNAFLOW PART NUMBER 12255. 2.25 inches inlet and outlet and it does have an offset. Hope this helps.

I remember driving it home from the shop after I got it put on. Windows down and a massive smile. :biggrin2:

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am definitely going with the Magnaflow 18".
The only muffler shops around here are Midas & Meineke's, which ones have you found to do better work or be satisfied with?

I don't think we have big fancy-pancy places like that here in Kalispell, Montana. :p I just went to a local shop.

and what muffler do yall think sounds nice and deep?

at the moment I have a 29 inch glasspack on and it sounds pretty good but looking for something a lil deeper maybe....

ive said it before but got no love from it but ive got a spintech, ive had it for a year and to me it's quiet, deep and sounds really clean. my buddy has the flowmaster on his 04 tacoma it seriously sounds way to ricey and high piched to me. but yeah check it out some guy has one on his runner on youtube. i would post some sound clips if i knew how but youtube hates me :( haha but seriously, it may not be a popular brand name and im all about getting the best of the best but i think this muffler was and is 100% worth it!

I just have a great thought and wonder if you guys would agree.
I have a sset of Dynomax Super Turbos that I had on my 66 Mustang for like a year or two (still new) because I went from a 2.25" to 2.5" exhaust and switched to the Flowmasters.
They are 2.25" and they have the center inlet and the offset outlet. Not sure how long they are, but wouldn't one of those mufflers fit on my T4R?
Would it be loud? I know they were quieter on the Mustang than the Flows.

I just went and measured the Dynomax mufflers I have and the body it only 14" long. That probably means they will be loud right?
Man I hate to spend the money on a muffler when I have 2 sitting in my basemant that will fit right on. The only cost would be the installation!
