Muffler and Exhaust Tip Selection

How do you guys pick mufflers and exhaust tips?

I see a lot of you have aftermarket mufflers, but why? Is it only for the sound, or is there a performance/MPG boost? If it's sound only, how do you know which one to pick? How do you know how they sound?

I've even seen some of you say you got Model X Magnaflow, but it was too loud so you went back and got Model Y.

HOW DO YOU KNOW BEFOREHAND WHAT THEY'LL SOUND LIKE?????

Also, I saw some Borla exhaust tips on autoanything.com (I liked this one), but it says the tip "...tunes your exhaust note to perfection for sweet sound." How do I know how this sounds? What if it sounds ridiculous, like those go-cart sounding 1995 Honda Civics that I hear all the time?

I just want a growling rumble when I accelerate and start the engine, and be otherwise tame/nice/normal at idle and at constant speed!

Just a muffler will really only change the sound of the exhaust. It may add a few HP, but you won't be able to tell.

I just listened to a lot of Youtube videos. You can find a lot of videos with different setups.

You might like the Flowmaster 50 or maybe the Magnaflow 24".

I heard a few magnaflows on runners and like it so thats what I went with. I have a 4x8 14" long muffler. It sounds good but is a bit to loud for my liking. I plan on ordering a 5x9 muffler 22" in length like everyone else is running. It will be quieter but still sound good.

I haven't seen any videos of a 5th Gen with an aftermarket muffler, but I know that it is kind of hard to get the 3rd Gen V6 to sound deep.

I just listened to the Flowmaster 50 on a 4.0 V6 (Explorer) and it sounded pretty good.

just as an FYI i have a Magnaflow 12256 5x8 oval x 18in i am pulling off of my runner tomorrow night. its only been on for about 400 mile and im looking to get rid of it cheap.

It's not bad, just louder than what i want for sound. like everyone says its about what you like and it just doesnt fit my taste for exhaust.

personally I think flowmasters sound very nice on the toyota engine. I had one on my fj also and could feel a slight increase in power but that was with the whole exhaust kit. I believe the 4runners have around a 2.5 inch pipe so if you want to increase power and add a little more horse you should probably upgrade the whole system instead of just the muffler. Right now I can't really find the whole muffler and pipe system for my 2010 4runner so i just upgraded the muffler at a local shop. They held up many mufflers to my truck and I liked the flowmaster 40 because I do like the grumble and the loudness of it. It is loud inside the cabin when you step on it. Good Luck:driving:
