life time warranty?

Hi there,

came across this on both toyota's FAQ and service manual.

Which parts does Toyota cover under the Lifetime Guarantee?

Does this read that muffler/shocks have life time warranty (which were first on the vehicle), or if you had service, those parts (that have been replaced) have life time warranty?

tail pipe fell off because the joint between muffle and tailpipe was too badly rusted, would prefer to avoid paying a few hundred $ if i dont have too

called up toyota they gave me vague answer and told me to come in to see if that is true. I have a 2002 4runner 4wd.

That 'Lifetime' warranty is only on those parts listed, that have been installed/replaced on your vehicle at a Toyota dealership. In other words, the original parts are not warranted past the original new vehicle warranty. Only the parts that you have already paid for once, to have replaced. And, when you see what they want to replace the original exhaust system with OEM parts, you hope you only have to pay for it once.

Unfortunately paying 3x the price isn't worth it for the warranty..

Just be aware that, in most cases, unless you get a quality stainless system, aftermarket replacement systems will not last anywhere near as long as the factory installed one.

the factory one is still works actually it is the tail pipe that fell off. the joint between the two is so rusted it can be attached again.

Shall I just weld them together? I do have an arc welder. or just better to get new ones.

the car unfortunately is not going to last by the time the after market fails...

the engine/transmission is still solid, it is just the suspension that needs a lot of care and replacement. becoming very costly too keep.

Unless the part or all of the system has already been replaced, the 'tail pipe' as you call it, is actually a resonator. And it connects to the center muffler section via a three bolt flange connection just before the rear axle. If the flange joint has failed, then some creative welding would be necessary to repair it. If the pipe rotted through after the flange joint, then you could just replace the rear resonator section, assuming you can separate the flange joint without causing too much damage. If the pipe separated before the flange, on the muffler side, then you will need to repair that pipe, or replace the center muffler section of the system.
