Muffler on 4.7L

Hi all,

I know this topic has been beat to death, but I want to get just a muffler to give my v8 the beefier sound. I was thinking of getting just a muffler and the tip set out behind the back wheel. (im not too concerned about the power gains, I think the V8 has enough power) I want something that will make the V8 sound like a V8. Nothing too loud just something that will give it a big of a rumble. And im on a budget and thats why i CANT get the catbacks, unfortunately.

So far from what I have read...

-Vortex: sounds nice on the 3.4L but what will it sound like on the 4.7L? Seems like people love it on thier v6s.
-Flowmaster 40 series: sounds loud as hell (from what i have read)
-other various customs...

what do yall think?

why not purchase a magnaflow muffler online that coincides with the one used in the full cat back system? I would think that for about 200 bucks you could purchase and have it installed.

do most muffler shops carry it? ok, i guess thats kinda vague because it depends what brands they carry.

But would it be cheaper to buy a muffler at a shop and have them install it or buy a muffler online and have them install it?

its easy to find as you just need to go to www.magnaflow.com and find the one used in the 4runner cat back and then find the corresponding muffler P/N in the muffler only section.

Thanks. Thats a good idea. does anyone know how the Vortex will sound compared to the magnaflow?

Quetion:
If I get a cat back, the sulfur smell will still continue right? I have gotten the TSB but I still get it once in a while when towing....

My suggestion is to buy a Gibson catback if you want quiet volume, but good sound and power. They are under 300 shipped and the fit and finish is great. I love ours.

The Gibsons do seem like they get very good feedback from those who get it and I have looked into it BUT Im in Canada. The shipping is the deal breaker. Its $150 to ship here. So after shipping and such, it is almost the same price as just buying it here.

Im throwing around ideas right now. Im thinking of getting a magnaflow muffler and pointed the tip out behind the wheel....

with my magnaflow and the TSB, I rarely have a return of the sulfur smell. Generally now its only while pushing the truck hard, in warmer temps with rear window down.

I just noticed that I never updated on my muffler situation. I got a magnaflow muffler. I saw that a lot of people usually get the 18" one but I got the 24" (i think, or 25). The guy at the muffler shop told me that I would thank him when I was pulling my trailer. I also got the tip bent out to the side behind the rear wheel. I got a 3.5" tip. I dont have any pics of it yet, but I'll post it when I get the chance.

Last i saw, i saw a Gibson catback for the V8 models going for $280 on burtman industries website....sounds like a good setup for next to dirt price.

The Gibson from Burtman is a good price for what you get. And from what I have read, it sounds good. Only thing is I'm in Toronto, Canada so shipping broke the deal. If I was in the states I would have got it for sure.

Sorry I havent had time. I just ran out and took a few with my camera phone. Pics arent that good, but you get the idea. Ill take more with my camera next time...
