Multimode "clunk"

Hello fellow multimode drivers,

With this seasons winter driving I have noticed a clunk coming from the t-case with I'm driving with the center diff open (AWD mode). It's not audible but I can feel it. The clunk occurs when go from coasting and hit the gas to start accelerating. AWD mode is working fine when doing this, as in I'm getting power to the front end.

Immediately I began thinking about u-joints going out but when I lock the center diff the clunk is gone which makes me think this is less likely. Crawled under the rig anyway and didn't feel any play.

Is this just a delay of the clutch engaging the front end when the diff is open? Any other multimode'ers out there experience a similar clunk? This may have been happening forever and I just didn't notice until recently but I want to make sure nothing more serious should be investigated.

This happens in mine too, same year T4R Limited, and only ever when pressing the accelerator from coasting. I *think* it's the system "catching up" with itself but I could be wrong. I'd be interested to know if it's something to look into as well.

Mine does it too in 4wd not in 2wd - same as yours. Done it for years, don't think its an issue. Luck and enjoy. :cowboy:

I'm glad to hear it's nothing to be worried about. Just annoying at times. When I had my 02 Chevy it was due to excessive backlash between the ping and ring gears, as well as an lubricated slip yoke that enters the transfer case. (Or exits depending on how you look at it)

Yeah I do most of my low traction driving to get to our ski resorts but we had an ice storm here so I was using it in town with a lot of stop-and-go traffic which is when I noticed it going on/off the gas a lot. Should probably service the T case and diffs anyway. Hasn't been done by me yet.
