Multimode transfer case to standard J-shift

2000 4Runner Limited. Anyone ever removed a mutlimode transfer case to replace it with a standard J-shift? Specifically what did you do with the wiring. I've been looking all day at wiring diagrams, I've found a bunch for the multi mode case, but nothing for how a standard J-shift 4Runner is wired.

I'm thinking I can just unplug the transfer case computer, and wire in a standard relay using the ADD wires and dash light wires I need from the original harness. Something like this.....

One thing I'm not sure about is Pin16 on the 4wd computer, it goes to the cruise control module. Not sure what the module is looking for from the 4wd computer.

Anyone played around with this?
Thanks!

Not advice but how come you want to change it? Just curious

I've got a Crawler I want to install, no way the multimode case will work without knocking about 4 inches or so out of the front of the fuel tank. The multimode case itself is about 3 inches longer than a standard J-shift case, thats not including the shift motor junk hanging off the back.

Even with the the standard J-shift case I'm probably going to have to cut out and rebuild part of the cross member to make it removable, very much like Steve had too here:

Looking at the wiring schematics some more, I'll have to install the neutral position switch and the Low position switch, looks like they have direct connections to ABS Module, Diff lock module (which is modded to use anytime), A/T Fluid temp light, and the engine control module. None of these switches are tied to the 4WD computer.

You appear to have this under control. But since I believe TheDurk has an early EWD he can shed some quality light on this if he is available.

This all depends on how close to OEM you want to be with the wiring.

One quick correction - the A/T P light is the transfer case neutral light, not the trans temp light.

The quickest/easiest way to get diagrams is get a 1/2 day subcription to Toyota TIS and download what you need. I did that to get the '97 diagrams (for parts truck) when I did my 2wd to 4wd swap on my '99 (I have the hard copy full manuals for my truck).

Ooooo, Charlie. 1997 is the one black hole in my EWD collection I use to help other posters on here. I would really appreciate any '97 EWDs you can share (if you still have them on disk). Other '97ers will thank you for it. If you want to e-mail it's thedurk at optimum dot net.

Like you, I have the book for mine. This is just to help others.

Email sent. I was amazed at how many wire colors, etc. changed between '97 and '99...

Never saw this, thanks! Can you download the pieces you want with a subscription or only print them out? I always thought that light had two jobs, come on when the T-case was in neutral and the trans was in park, and as an indicator of the trans getting hot. Hmm.

Either way, at this point I just need to figure out what the cruise control module is looking for from the 4wd ECU, and see if I can find the wiring schematic for a standard J-shift 4Runner.

Thanks guys!

They come as small groups of pages. For what you are looking to do, it will be perfect. I can't remember if I had to print to PDF or if they were already PDFs...

TheDurk is much more on the ball than I am with helping people... but we can make it happen.

The J-shift switches just switch to ground, and I bet the 4WD computer does the same thing with a transistor. I do believe the Limited dash wiring is totally different though to accommodate the push-button AC, but it shouldn't be too hard to unplug the 4WD computer and connect a few wires in place of it.

TIS manual files are PDF - you can download as many as you have time and patience for until your subscription runs out.

Last time I did it a 48 hour subscription cost $15, but that was a few years ago. That was enough time to pretty much snag everything in the FSM and all the wiring diagrams. Plus, it's all legal!

Biggest problem is you wind up with a bunch of files with funny names, and you have to spend some time sorting things out and indexing them.

Here is the 4wd wiring for a '99 with J-shift (both 5-speed and auto).

Just to update this thread, I successfully swapped from the multi mode to the J-shift and got the front diff and dash lights to work, simple relay did the trick.

I noticed this morning though, that my cruise control doesn’t work. The light comes on the dash, but I can’t set the hold speed. Thinking maybe it looks for some signal from the 4wd computer that I took out. Does anyone have a schematic for the cruise control circuit for a 2000 4Runner with the multi-mode case?

Yup, The cruise control definitly gets a feed from the 4wd computer. So what I need to know is on a standard J-shift truck, where does the wire go to from the Cruise module, that goes to the 4wd computer on a multi mode truck. I'm guessing it has something to do with speed of the truck, its probobly not getting a speed indicator to go off of. So I need to find a CC wiring diagram for a standard J shift truck. Need to see if I can get into website linked earlier.

On another note: Reading back over my original comments, I knew there was a CC wire to deal with. Forgot all about it while taking care of all my other aspects of this swap.:frusty:

Thank you!

Í don't have 2000, but '99 is generally the same (excluding DRLs). If so, the connection is a green orange/wire from pin 7 (SPD) of the C18 plug on the CC ECU to the Combination meter. I don't see any link to the 4wd computer.

I only have it on paper so I can't post it for you.

Thanks for the help.

Does your pin out say anything about pin 13 on the CC ECU?

The schematic for the multimode 4x4 computer shows the green/orange wire coming from the combo meter (speedo) and going to pin 3 of the 4x4 computer. Then there is a yellow/red wire coming from pin 16 of the 4x4 computer and going to pin 13 of the CC ECU.

I'm wondering if there is a separate Green/Orange wire going to the CC ECU or if the green/orange wire going to the 4x4 ecu gets passed through then back out to the CC ECU.

Thanks

Pin 13 is a Yellow/Red going to the "A/T INDICATOR LIGHT SWITCH (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH)"

On a 5-Speed this goes to the CC switch on the dash, which I guess the A/Ts don't have? Maybe THIS is your issue.

The green/orange wire leaves the Comb. SW on Pin 3 and goes to Plug 3E Pin 8. Then it splits into FIVE more green/orange wires that leave on the same Plug 3E as follows:

Pin 7: Diff Lock ECU
Pin 5: 4wd ECU
Pin 6: AC Amplifier
Pin 4 : CC ECU
Pin 10: ECM

So I don't see how the 4wd ECU disappearing would have any effect.
