My 1989 4Runner SR5 Project.

I Just got a 1989 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 (not currently running).
it has a rebuilt engine and transmission with approximately 10,000 miles on it before it was involved in a front end crash. it has been parked since the crash 10 years ago.

The engine did turn over 2 years ago but it needs a radiator, fan, and miscellaneous other parts to run. I got it for free and am going to try to turn it into an off-road project. I joined the forum so I could post updates as i go and get advise when needed.

Looks good to me. There's trucks here worse then that people try to get $1500 to $2k for. You know you have have the Northern users salivating with a rust free body and frame, right?

Good luck and be patient. Go in expecting nothing to work and be pleasantly surprised if something does.

If it gets to be too much, just don't crush her.

Bringing home my 1989 Toyota 4Runner SR5

I finally made the 90 mile road trip to bring the 4Runner home and give it a wash.

After my first round of cleaning photos.

Took the top off and gave it a good cleaning. I also removed all the old carpet.

1989 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Update.

Since my last post I have done the fallowing:

Cleaned out the fuel tank.
New fuel pump.
New fuel pump gasket seal.
New fuel tank vent/fuel lines.
New fuel filter.
Engine oil changed / New oil filter.
New set of iridium spark plugs installed.
New radiator.

I temporarily borrowed a battery and MAF Meter from another 4runner.

And it's alive!!!!!!! started on the 1st try (1st time in over 10 years), and the engine runs perfectly.

Timing belt

So I installed a new Timing belt, Water pump, tensioner, pulleys, and Cam seals.

July 1st 2015 Update.

I purchased another 1989 4runner (bad engine) for parts. I paid $500 for it and it has already paid for its self in parts.

So fair I have installed the fallowing parts onto my project 4runner from the parts 4runner:

Power Steering Gearbox
Radiator Core Support
AC Core
Grill, Headlights, and Running lights.
Left and Right Front Quarter Panels
Hood
Distributer Cap
Driveshaft Bolts

I then purchased the fallowing items:

New Battery
New Shifter Knobs
New Seat Covers


So fair I have driven it about 300 miles without any problems.

Fun project. Where did you purchase the fuel gauge sending unit? How much did it cost and is it working okay? The OEM Toyota ones are $180+

I did not replace the sending unit, i just cleaned up the old one and installed a new fuel pump ($44 on Ebay) and a new gasket.
