My 2nd 4Runner Suspension Collapse

My 2nd 4Runner Suspension Failure

Well I had yet another problem with my 4Runners suspension.

After a weekend of off roading with Josh I was pulling out of a parking lot tonight and I heard a horrible noise from the right rear of my car. When I got out of the car and started looking around with a flashlight, I immediately noticed my right rear shock hanging down.

Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the bolt that holds the shock to the axel was gone and that allowed for my shock to come off its angled mount.

Sadly though, the problems were not done yet.

I used my little stock bottle jack to lift my car up off the ground by the frame and took the wheel off to get a better idea of what would be the best fix. To allow for the shock and its mount to line up, I lowered the car a bit but when I tried to raise it up again the jack seized up and hook at the end of the pole you use to crank the jack broke off.

Thankfully some guy saw that I was working on my car and came out and asked if there was anything he could do, and I used his floor jack to lift my car and take out the now seized bottle jack.

In the end I got the shock back on its mount and just used zip ties to secure the shock to the mount so that I could drive home and I will be taking the car to Toyota tomorrow to get the bolt and have them inspect everything to make sure everything else is fine.

Anyone else have a problem like this?

Thank god for you and Kimma it didn't happen on some of those trails. Could you imagine? Especially on the one we camped on.

haha yeah this was not too bad though, calling it a collapse is somewhat deceiving, but i am glad i did those trails with all 4 shocks haha

Yes but that is also when pulling out of a driveway. It could have been a lot worse hitting some of those bumps at high speeds.

Well a little update...

When I woke up this morning to bring my car to today and hopefully just get a new bolt put on I noticed that the check engine light was on and the vsc light was flashing. When I started driving I could feel something was off in the suspension and I realize there is something off on both the front left and right rear, so it looks like my xreas somehow got messed up when the shock came loose.

I just hope this doesn't turn into too big of an ordeal...

Wow I'm not impressed at all.

WTF were you guys driving over?

Hope the car was clean so that they will treat it as warranty and not abuse.

Fire roads and a few trails which required 1st gear, and 4LO. He had it happen pulling out of a driveway after we had already gotten back.
