My 3rd gen t4r problems

Okay so i bought a 99 limited 4wd spring of 09 everything was good to begin with...

June of 2009 i tore the flex plate and torque converter out of it
i had that replaced by toyota in myrtle beach, sc
after i had all that replaced the transmission started jerking very violently at low rpms along with throwing a misfire code on cyl. 4
i need some help getting this back to good condition

BTW 228k on the original motor, tranny and shell


ALSO thinking about putting a 3.0 diesel in it and i need input on that

my buddys 4runner started doing this a couple weeks ago but and it turned out he got some bad fuel and one of his injectors got clogged so it was running on 5 cylinders. If youre getting a misfire its probably not the transmission, youre either not getting fuel or not getting spark to that one cylinder. Try pulling the plug wire while its running to see if it changes how it runs first.
 
How did you check for spark? I would test the coil (the one closest to the radiator is the one that fires hole 4). Did you test the wire(s)?
 
i checked for spark typically how you would, remove the sparkplug and hold it to the outter cylinder wall or a good ground, mine is running coilpacks with jumper wires the secondary wires are testing good for resistance, but the misfire doesnt really bother it im more concerned with the tranny violently shaking

I'm guessing the "violent shaking" is only due to the misfire. Have you replaced the plugs? How does it do during acceleration from 55-65 range? Old plugs will still spark, but not consistently enough for when it's critical.

I've had this same symptom on 3 T4R's, it's always been the plugs never the tranny.

Where are you in NC? I'm guessing 336 area code? Thomasville, maybe? :lol:

When these things turn into a 5 cylinder itll feel like the whole damn truck is coming apart, id double check to make sure your misfire is not causing it, ive never seen any of these trannies do that before but youd be suprised how much one cylinder can change the way the truck runs.

ive had the spark plugs changed out by toyota and everything is fine for a few days then it goes back to misfiring im actually in Winston salem

Wires, then? Maybe move the coil packs around and see if the misfire code moves?

Really, I thought my tranny was going to explode, took it to a reputable transmission shop and they said "would love to take your money but there's nothing wrong".
