My 4R is going to kill me!

Like the title says, my 4R is going kill me. Here in Maine all the snow is pretty much melted and that leaves a coating or sand along all the edges of all the roads. Well for the 4th time in about as many days the VSC has darn near killed me because of it. Every time I try to pull out into traffic and the rear wheels spin even a tinny bit the brakes lock up the throttle dissapears and Im stuck half in the travel lane im trying to pull out in with cars bearing down on me. This is the only vehicle Ive ever driven that does this. In a normal vehicle the rear wheels spin a little in the sand, grip and away you go but not in this death trap. I need a fix for this or Im going to consider trading it in for something else....:ybrick:

Look into this mod to add a VSC off button: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfo...rs-more/41357-vsc-off-atrac-mod-complete.html and http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/71144-part-number-factory-vsc-off-switch.html#post606651 or http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/42231-how-turn-off-traction-control.html. Many of these are for turning off Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), I'd have to double check if any of these write-ups disable traction control (TRAC) or not. Here's a post I made after finding someone else's about a plug that can be pulled to disable both VSC and TRAC (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/76642-turn-off-traction-control.html#post654580) however you'd have to pop the hood to enable/disable it.

thanks for the links, I jsut read thru them, seems I might be confused, What is VSC and how does it work and what is ATRAC and how does it work?

Which one is causing what I first posted? Some help will possibly restore my sanity. Its the no throttle response and braking thats causing the problem.

VSC will help prevent oversteer/understeer so if you're turning that will help your vehicle stay straight. TRAC is what reduces the power when accelerating to prevent further wheel slipping to gain traction again (sound like what you're experiencing). ATRAC is when one of the wheels on the same axle is slipping it will apply the brakes to act like a limited slip differential (since we have open differentials, except for the center one). So if you're trying to get going from a stop it's either TRAC or ATRAC. If only one side of the vehicle is losing traction ATRAC could kick in by applying the brakes so that the wheel on the opposite side will get power instead of spinning the wheel with lease resistance. TRAC would be when both of the back wheels are slipping at the same time, the system will purposely slow down to try and allow the tires to grip.

I'm new and by no means an expert, just curious what tires you are running and tread left. My 2000 AWD Expedition had major slip in slick conditions until I switched to BFG AT.

Just a thought . . .

No, it's not his tires. I've had the exact same complaint about my 4R, even with full-time AWD. I've relocated to SoCal, so I don't have that problem often anymore, but if I was still in the Northeast, I'd definitely do the VSC-off mod.

I know what you're talking about. Pull out into traffic, hit a little patch of snow that gets one wheel spinning a bit, and the whole truck slows down. Maddening.

Why not just put it in 4x4? You would then have the traction of AW

I could but its silly to need to all spring when I've never had this problem with any of the other 20 cars Ive owned...

Okay, but that's the simple solution.

Of course, you'd have to put up with superior AWD handling, better lane tracking, more even tire and drive train wear and all that, but, still, it might be worth it.

VSC is still active in 4H and it will still sense the back tires slipping and will respond the same way. You'd have to lock the center differential, which is NOT recommended for street driving.

I'm definitely going to look into the "VSC Off" mod... a little wheel spin is good now and then!

its still active but in awd it can transfer power to the front wheels and you have more traction in the first place. I think if the OP makes sure his tire pressure is correct and is just careful not to gun it in these situations he should be fine. If you just take off nice and easy you can still ramp up to a fast pace of acceleration.

This is a common issue with newer vehicles with traction control. My Mother in laws Avalon does the same thing in the gravel and rain. My work car (08 Chevy impala) does it too.

You have to adjust your throttling of the pedal. Start out slower and then give it more gas. Turning the VSC off will just make your tires spin on the gravel and wet road and cause your vehicle to oversteer.

Problema de potencia??

Goodnight friends, I have a similar problem to that raises JERRYDOG. I have a V8 SE 4R2006, and on the road can not increase the speed of 40 mph to more, even when accelerated to fund. With them go up to 4000 rpm, but speed does not increase as it should. Not be driving conn TRAC? Or lack power?

Gracias

I am assuming your translation program isn't very accurate, but from the gist of what you are saying it actually sounds like you have the center diff button locked, or are in a low gear.

Problema de potencia??

Gracias por la ayuda BLACKWORK, En realidad le digo que no aumenta la potencia del vehiculo, estando en modo (D) automatica.`Es`posible que este sin yo saberlo en modo TRAC??
