My 4runner got totaled :-(

My 65 yo mom was driving my 2 yo son in our 1999 4runner (4wd, V6, 237k mi, rust free, ran great) to the store yesterday afternoon when an uninsured, unlicensed ******* whipped in front of her to make a left turn across traffic. She was going about 45-50 mph, not sure what ******* was doing, but she didn't even have time to brake, I believe. Thank God, they were both ok. Mom has some pain in her thumbs and my son appears perfectly fine, just upset. He told me "the car got broken." They went to the er and got checked out. ******* will be charged, according to the police officer I talked to.

Not sure what will happen with the insurance. They will look at it tomorrow probably. The 4runner had a 2x12 for a bumper after a previous fender bender. The replacement bumper was sitting on my work bench waiting on a fastener order to get here so I could put it on!

I was just totally impressed by how well the 4runner protected my family. It could have been so much worse!

Any tips for dealing with the insurance would be appreciated. I am not sure if it is worth trying to buy it back and part it out.

Of course the guy driving a piece of shit lime green hunk of junk was unlicensed and uninsured...

Wow.... I feel for you. So sorry for seeing this. Of course, the people who drive like pieces of sh!t don't seem to care about being responsible enough to have insurance...

It's happening everywhere these days.... I would love it if an authority could go and take their property and auction it off to pay back their victims. Without the courts and such that is...

That or make the ******* work in prison to pay off the damages and then stay there for a good while longer because he's too ignorant to care about other people's belongings.

We may be looking at buying a gen 4 4runner, a 2003 V8 4x4 with 190k mi, from a family member. I haven't got experience with the fourth generation 4runners. How do they compare to the generation threes? This particular car's been up in Kentucky and Indiana its whole life so I guess rust is a consideration. We live in the south so it's never been a problem for us.

All depends on what you want to do with it. I think the general consensuses, is Gen 3 is built for outdoors, while the Gen 4 is more for City Life more or less. I was just reading a thread on here talking about this very thing. Most everyone preferred the Gen 3 I believe. But, I've never even sat in a 4th Gen so my personal feelings aren't relevant.

Glad your mom and son are ok. Take the insurance money and find another 3rd Gen. It will probably take you a while to find a good one, but so worth it.

Glad you're ok, I just got in a wreck with mine two weeks ago today and its totaled. My engine is still good though and I have lots to take off.. If mine was like yours I don't know if I would even bother unless you have a demand for parts in your area :(

I had a car that the insurance labeled as totaled when the only thing that happened was the air bag deployed and a bumper fell off.

Glad everyones okay! Sorry to hear about the accident.

Sorry for the hassle, I'm dealing with geico now and they don't want to pay after I was hit in the ass by their client.

Hunk of shit? That caprice is valued way above any 4runner in an apple to apple comparison of vehicle conditions.

And oh BTW caprice-1/ 4runner-0.

Edit: I am bothered by the complete willingness of others here who are good with circumventing out justice system. Here's how this should work. 1. Driver is un insured 2. you claim on your insurance uninsured motorist 3. your insurance pays you 4. Your insurance put's a lean on respocible party per police report 5. State suspends license or indictment is issued for driving on bad license. 6. driver corresponds or lives with suspended license or warrent and potentially goes to jail.

^happened to me once for $7700 in damamge to a 5 year old nissan maxima, but I made a settlemet for my license to be returned with the pursuing insurance company for $2200. Got my license back, and have insurance now as it took forever tp save the money and risked being caught driving when I was suspended.

Hahahahahahaha!!!!! Thanks for that, I needed a good laugh this morning. I hope you are being sarcastic because saying that piece of s**t caprice is worth more than the 4Runner is probably one dumbest statements I have heard in a long time.

To the OP I'm sorry to hear about your 4Runner but I'm glad to hear it kept your family safe. Hopefully you find another 4Runner to replace your green one.

I would like to buy your Front Bumper!!!! :bump::clap2:

Your radiator looks pretty nice too :)

Glad your family is safe!

i wonder what idiot was driving that chevy?

Don't count the 4th gen V8 out. You may just fall in love when you try it out.

A definite blessing no major injuries came of it

Glade everyone is ok! It's defiantly worth buying back. I bought mine back for 125. Replaced bumper all lights grill evaporating cooler and straightened the radiator support at the bottom and she's good as new. For yours you may have 2 grand in parts there depending on condition.

Glad to hear they were OK! What a crazy accident in all senses of the word. I'd be pissed if they threw that guys ridiculous looking rim cover in my 4Runner after all of that. If it was my mother (58 year old grandma), she would have thrown that thing back at the guy like Xena.

Just curious, how do we think the 4Runner would have fared with the bumper installed? 45-50 is still probably into the totally category, eh?

As far as what to do in terms of generations, everyone has said it already. If off-road then 3rd. If stock/light-off-road/daily then 4th.

I'll raise a glass (of premium 5w-40 synth oil) to toast your old Runner tonight.
