my 4runner sleeping solution $40 tent set up

I found this thread while searching for something else. I decided to resurrect it since I’ve been sleeping in my 4Runner for several years. I spent too many nights in tents while it was raining hard or during thunderstorms and I had to pack my tent in the rain once too often.

I took a completely different tact when I decided to try sleeping in my 4Runner. I decided to use a cot to get above the flipped up seat bottoms. I got a Coleman Converta Cot. It works great. It takes no special preparation to use. Just remove the cargo cover, recline the rear seats and slide in the cot. The cot has a cantilevered back and head section so you can adjust it and use it like a lounge chair. The cot is just tall enough to clear the rear seat bottoms. The cot back rests on the rear seats and tilts up slightly but not enough to make a difference to me anyway. I put a couple of backpacker sleeping pads on the cot and whatever sleeping bag I need for the temperature ranges expected. I also use a traveling pillow. I find it to be very comfortable.

One thing great about it is it allows a lot of storage under the cot that stays out of the way while camping. It is also a great platform for storing cargo while traveling. I usually leave most of the gear in the truck when I’m camping along both sides and under the cot. I have to bring a lot of stuff for dirt riding. Camping gear, riding gear and tools and stuff to maintain the bike or fix it. I keep the space beside one of the rear doors clear and use that as the space to take my socks and shoes off and climb into and out of the cot. I drive with my seat all the way back. I fold the cantilevered section over while driving so I can slide my seat back and keep the cot setup with storage under it and on top of it.

I crack the back window about an inch and a half while sleeping. I have found that to be enough to ventilate the truck. Bugs don’t come in for some reason. I was going to fabricate something with mosquito netting but found it wasn’t necessary. I have found that the truck will fog up if the window is just slightly opened.

There are only two disadvantages to sleeping in the 4Runner this way that I’ve noticed. The first is that it is a little tight getting in and out of the cot and sleeping bag. There isn’t enough headroom to sit up straight on the cot. I’m 5’11” and 180 pounds with average build and I don’t have a problem getting in and out. It’s just not like sitting on the side of a bed though. The second disadvantage is that there is only enough room for one cot in the 4Runner. I have to use a tent if my girl friend comes with me. That is a small price to pay for getting to go on an adventure with her.

I also usually bring a 10x10 popup canopy and set that up behind the 4Runner. It provides a nice covered area by the truck incase it rains. It only has an 8x8 canopy but that is plenty of covered area for me.

For a long time I have been chewing on the idea of replacing my bike trailer with an all aluminum v-nose enclosed trailer. I would build a lightweight wall to create a bike garage on the back of the trailer and create a dry camper in the front. That would be nice but my homeowners association doesn’t allow the storage of trailers in the yard. I get away with the trailer I have now by keeping it in the shed. I can’t do that with a big enclosed trailer. Maybe someday. I would keep most of my camping and bike gear permanently stored in the trailer if I had one. I would never have to pack and unpack. I would just restock what I used after each trip.

have you seen the thread on the rear cargo box/sleeping platform? i'm most likely going to build one of those soon enough, and i like the cot idea, for comfort, but seems bulky and a bit of a space hog when stowed as opposed to some netting and magnets, and the whole thing about room for one doesn't fly with the girlie, but for a single guy with just enough gear for one i can see how that would be a great set-up, it's just between my gear and the womans +the rock climbing gear/adventure stuffs space gets tight quick, the netting packs flat and can easily be stored in the lid of a backpack with clothes and hiking gear.

good job on bringing the thread back and new ideas are always welcome, and i really do like the idea, it's just not practical for my particular uses.

I know this is not a great picture, but it will suffice.
I am building this small camping trailer.
All parts are bought on the cheap from Craigslist or surplus metal store.

I am putting a folding platform above the carrier. Inside the folding platform will be a tent that will open up with the platform.

They sell tent trailers for lots of $$$

Currently I have about $300 in materials, now I just need to put it all together.

It is light weight and my smaller 4Runner with the 22RE should be able to pull it off roading.

I have used it camping without the tent part attached and the truck pulled it O.K.

Will post up more when I complete the project.

yeah i made my tent thing for a 5K miles road trip, did not want to be pulling a trailer, but that might be kinda sweet for local trips! keep updating to this thread man! i'd like to watch the build.

man those pics of the mountains you posted was really cool, i bet they were like 230492342u3oiu times better in person...lucky i wish i lived on the west coast...but i got east coast...

thanks man forgot i even put those up!!!

:wink2:

i cannot even begin to describe some of the views out here some places you are surrounded 360 degrees and 100 miles deep by mountains of all kinds, jagged rocky ones, snow capped year round, rolling hills, i have been round the world twice and have never found a place as cool as washington, we got deserts and rain forests with in 4 hours of each other with crazy mountain wilderness inbetween,(people train on mt.rainer for Everest and Denali ) not to mention the Puget sound, the only place on earth like it, we have animals that only live here and no where else in the world, as well as migrating orcas, bear, moose, cougar, and the rest of the forest life. yeah...not ragging on other parts of the country but seriously no where else can you find such a wide verity of terrain and conditions so close to each other, again i'll stand by that out of everywhere i've ever been washington has the greatest outdoors around, period. if you ever get the chance you gotta make it out here.

The second disadvantage is that there is only enough room for one cot in the 4Runner. .

May I ask why there isn't room for a second cot? I'm considering doing a similar thing, but I've heard the width of the cargo area is 52", the cot you purchased is only 25" wide. Shouldn't two be able to fit? Let me know. Thanks!

wheel wells!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:roadkill:

But the cot should sit above the wheel wells...?

the stance of the legs from where they fold out to form the "X" to support the weight, side by side it should be off by a few inches, but hey i could be wrong if it works it works and it all depends on what cots your using.

you just have to remember that width number your talking about there isn;t from wheel well to wheel well it's from wall to wall

sorry, had a friend ask me about this and all of my photo's are in my photobucket account, far easier to just post them here then send one by one to him and i figured you guys can see how it all worked out.

yeah those are cool, but i think their are like 1K-1.5K right?
i've seen a few peopel with those on thier 80 series LC's and they looked good,
not gonna lie i want one but far to expensive for how much i'd use it and for what it is, i think i could basicly make the same thing got 1/2 price

Oh yeah i agree. I dont think id ever see a need for one in my life. But man they are freaking cool.

I used to just buy a piece of screen like material (costs next to nothing ) from wally world big enough to cover the whole door opening then close the door on it....

then viola! a perfectly sealed screen for camping in your car... this only works if you have power windows... its hard to crank a window with a screen in the way....

If you cruise "C" 's list long enough, you can find a roof top tent for cheap enough. $350.
Granted, it's not an ARB brand, but it works :)
I decided to put it on a small trailer instead of on the roof since I wheel my '87. The '99 isn't quite ready for the rigors of off roading yet....

Nice. That's an awesome, super functional addition. I like it a lot. I was thinking of trying to do some sort of pop out to either the rear or side, so on wet surf days I could hang my wetsuit somehow and maybe with the addition of a heat source, dry it out. Nothing worse than putting on a cold wet suit.

Izzard, I am so glad you resurrected this thread, because how the F*CK did you get away from this thread without any comments about that mullet?

But in all fairness to Joe Dirt there, I rocked one on a bet last year. It lasted 1 day before I cut it off.

Worst bet ever. I had to grow my hair out for 10 months for it. Never doing that again.
