No, it had plenty of oil! That was the 1st thing I checked. Had about 5k miles on the oil and it still looked clean.
And no, my Brother-in-law drove it up the road a 1/2 mile to pick up his son from daycare. He's not the "hot dog" type either. Said he heard a pop on the way back and just barely made it back to the house.

Really sorry to hear about this. Hopefully you can find a replacement 3.4L engine without to much difficulty or cost.
Fortunately this sort of failure is pretty rare. Especially in a Toyota but sometimes even Toyota's suffer from odd catastrophic failures. It can happen to just about any machine.
I wonder if the engine was sludged up and this happened from oil starvation?

Oil still looked great. Only 5K miles since last oil change...was actually going to change it this weekend.
Found a used 3.4L for $1,850 w/ 80K on it. Still looking though...
We have completely decided if we should have it repaired or just sale the 4Runner as is and get something else. Stil deciding.

It's just a mode of transportation to get her from point A to B. Although, she really wants a new 4th gen...or a Sequoia for that matter. Either way, her next vehicle will be a Toyota as long as she's married to me! Ok, so I've found 2 more motors at another yard...both out of a 2000:
122K miles - $975
118K miles - $1100
Both come w/ a 6mon warranty.
122K motor sounds pretty doable.

I personally haven't checked this out, but as the brochure says. " you already own a junkyard engine, Why buy another?"
The shop I work in installs these motors. Of course if your runner isn't a 4x4, why bother. Not knocking 2x.

A sale is a possibility, but there are too many "life variables" in play at the moment that are too long to go into detail about.
I will never use a jasper motor. A guy came into the shop and wanted to use one instead of rebuilding his. We got the motor, put it in and it started leaking coolant at the water pump seal at the block. It was a brand new pump so we tore it off and found the pump mating surface on the block was badly pitted and etched. The block never should have been used. We had to seal it with FIPG and use a new gasket. Buy a new toyota short block and reuse all the rest of your stuff. You will at least know its better than some reman block from joe nobody

So $2300 for the short block plus $800 per head is almost $4000, not including gaskets, and all those other little while i'm doing this i might as well replace this type parts.
If it were me, my first choice would be to find a wrecked 4runner, and buy the whole truck and use what i needed and part the rest out (especially having 2 of them in your family all ready) Theres probably a good chance you could come out close to even other than your labor.
second choice would be to check car-parts.com for a good deal on a used engine.

I found this, I don't know if you want a reman but it's worth a shot. You would probably loose some of the core charge due to the hole but it still seems like a good price.

Wow. Had the same thing happen on my 2000 runner last year on the 4th of July. We had all of the service done on time and at the same dealership. Took it back to them and they couldn't figure out why it happened. Then they even sent a regional Toyota rep down to look it over too....still nothing.
They eventually replaced it and covered all the parts. We had to pay the labor though which still came out a bit over $2k IIRC.
