My 4runner's fan just blew apart while driving, for the second time! HELP!

Alright so my 1991 4runner's fan blew apart again, it is not the first time it has happened. the first time it did, it shot pieces of plastic up into my hood, tore my radiator apart as well as the fan shroud. It was expensive to fix, the first time it happened was about a year and a half ago. It just happened again. I am not about to fix it with out knowing that it will not happen again. ANY ideas as to why this would happen(again)?

That exact same thing happened to me when I had my '90 runner. Are you using oem replacement fans? I would make sure that the nuts are torqued to the right specs. I never had it happen a second time though.
 
Sorry I can't remember. A Chilton's manual would have the torque specs in there and some auto parts stores may have that info too if they have repair diagrams on their computer system.
 
Are you using the original fan-clutch? That may be the issue or at least part of the cause. If the fan clutch never releases, even when it should, that would add stress and shorten the life of the fan I would think... Disregard if the '91's didn't use a fan clutch:D
 
I have the FSM. Gimme a bit and I'll try to look it up.

Also I would go for OEM. Trust me (and others) the quality of the platic is much better. If you used an aftermarket one then that would be the reason it flew apart.

You replaced everything yourself right? (that's a very good thing)

Also I what rad. did you get? It was a fate thing I betcha, look at the passages in the old radiator and I'll bet you they were becoming blocked. A new radiator, fan and shroud is alot cheaper than a HG replacement. :thumb3:
 
At this point, why not convert to an electric fan? Priced one for my '99 with a thermostat for around $100. Plus you get a little gain from not having that fan dragging you down.
 
Thank you all for your help! I am interested in trying to figure out if the fan clutch is working. That is one thing that I have not checked. Looking at what is left of the fan, and the bolts and remnants left on fan clutch, it would seem that nothing came loose so I do not think it was a torque issue.

Ok but know "too tight" could be the issue too. The focus on torque isn't always about bolts falling out...
