My $5 mod in 5 mins.

So what if I dropped/lost the plug from the car down in the dash? I have a '23 ORP and I can't seem to fish it out. I've tried a paperclip, 90 degree pliers, etc. I'm so annoyed at myself.

Does anyone know if I follow the head unit removal procedure if I can reach back and get to this area?

I would try that...you may be able to reach it.

For those of us with a 5th gen SR5 or SR5P, is it the connection to the BCM missing or a connection to the back of the head unit?

It seems those of us with that trim have the dummy plug and the cable available, but it isn’t connected to anything at the other end.

See post #267 for SR5/SR5P's - not a 5 minute mod unfortunately...

Yes. I didn't drop the plug, but since I have an SR5, I had to run the additional wires, so I had to remove the head unit to get to the plug. I do recall having to remove the vents (or ducts) also after the head unit was removed.

Do you have a post or write up on how/what you did? Would be open to giving it a try.

Quick update,
I ordered a used 89121-30020 on eBay for $52 and installed it on my 2021 SR5 and it is working just like I understand that it should. I will test it more over the next few days as I try different driving scenarios such as driving at night and driving into dim parking structures but so far I can get the nav screen to dim by simply putting my hand over the light sensor.

I have not made any Entune menu settings like described in post #55 by ElectroBoy yet, it seems that my menu is a bit different.

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread, no more blinding nav screen when I start the vehicle at night.

Hey J-Dub,

Wanted to verify this was in an SR5 non premium right?

Thank you

Installed one I ordered off Ebay in my '23 ORP and it works fine. I love that I can now run with headlights on and have the buttons etc ilumited in the day, but have the display on bright. I have dark tinted windows and the buttons are a bit hard to find, even in the daylight. After this mod, the illumination makes them easier to spot .

Hi folks, I'm going to be pulling out my head unit soon for an Alpine upgrade and wanted to knock this out as well if it is feasible. I have a 2016 SR5 Premium. I've already installed the new light sensor and got it plugged into the wire that was present from the factory.

Could anyone else with a SR5 Premium who has successfully completed this let me know what steps they took that worked for them? I believe all I am missing are the pins going into the body ECU F9 connector, though please correct me if I am wrong. I purchased the vehicle with a remote started already installed.

Much thanks!

I just installed an eBay 89121-30020 (~$19) into my 2021 SR5 (not Premium, just a plain SR5) and confirmed it works perfectly, no wiring required.

(and by perfectly, the gauge and headunit brightness is no longer tied to the light switch)

I just did this mod on my 15 trail premium and it is working halfway since I have an android radio t12v2. It dims the speedometer but does not dim the radio when I have my hand over the light sensor. I have my t12v2 set to automatic for display lights and also google maps set to auto.

Anyone with an android radio have any ideas how to make this work with the light sensor?

Turn down the instrument light knob from the top position.
