My 86 Turbo 4Runner Dilemma

I have an 86 turbo 4Runner with 186000 mi. running fairly well right now. The problem is, I have leaks in the rear main engine seal and the timing cover as well as the oil pan. I am also burning oil in two of my cylinders. The dealer wants over $3000 to make this all right (LOL) Do I rebuild?? Do I drop in remanufactured?? Could I drop in a standard 22re. For now I will just drive it but what are some of your thoughts and opinions on what I should do????

If you're considering a motor rebuild, the most important question is the condition of the turbo. At 186K most are shot unless they've been taken care of really well.

If the turbo is bad, it may not be worth rebuilding the motor.
A new one at the dealer is ~$1800 if it's still available. There is/was a place that would rebuild the stock turbo for $900-1000.
There are some aftermarket replacement units, they're better but not quite bolt-on.

If the turbo is good, I'd try an independant shop w/a good rep over the stealer for a rebuild. There are differences between the RE and RTE, but you could drop a complete RE in to replace the RTE.
