My audio install

I was thinking about starting this thread as a DIY/pics of my system install as I do it.

I started by removing the front door panels today. I removed the tweeters and the 6x9's.

I tore the cloth out of the 6x9's and used the remaining mouting material as my spacer. I created plexiglass spacer and glued it to the mount and screwed/glued the speaker to the spacer. I'll attach pics in a few...

Here's the door removal pics from the toyota manual.

Unscrew these 2 screws and pop one plastic snap-like thing then pull off the door with all your might.

Finally, you can unscrew this piece if you want to run wire through the door to the cabin. I haven't done this yet but will when I run the tweeter wire.

I haven't figured out where to install the amp and crossovers. I was thinking about putting them under the seat, but not 100% sure. Same with the cross over. Not really sure where to put them. I saw a post with them in the door but I'm not convinced that mine will fit. Maybe there's room under the steering wheel.

I got the headunit in. Pics to follow. Then I removed the driver's seat to install my amp for the from door speakers....





And the amp didn't fit. I ran the wires over to the seat, removed the seat and then double checked the amp fit. It did. Then I started hooking the wires up and pulled the seat over it to screww it back in place and make sure and guess what? The seat rested on the amp. I, like an dumbass, didn't check the fit before doing the install. omg. So the seat is loose and I'm going to try the passenger seat tomorrow. My fingers are crossed. If anyone wants to break in to my car tonight the driver's seat is unscrewed.

Here's the headunit install kit. It DOES fit the 2006 SR5 with base stereo. I only say this because I had trouble finding the info before ordering the kit.

Here's my door speaker replaced. I used the original speaker spacer. I ripped out the paper OEM speaker and created a Plexiglas plate to cover where the old speaker was. Then I cut a hole in the Plexiglas for the new speaker and glued it all together.

Infinity Perfects that I took out of my old car. They fit fwiw. I did have to cut the door panel plastic about 1/2 inch to allow it to properly snap back in place. No biggie since noone will see it.

I did the same basic thing with the tweeter. I had hoped to put the tweeter closer to the midrange but I couldn't think of a good way to do it without cutting the door panel. I used the Plexiglas scraps to creater the tweeter mount as you can see. If you've done this install recently you will notice that I put the wrong tweeter mount on the door and it's also upside down. I was forced to make it right when the door panel didn't fit back on lol. :p

Very nice writeup. Please post more pictures. I'm looking to replace the speakers on my '04 4Runner with the base audio.
I have 5.25" speakers for the front and 6x9" speakers for the rear. They are Infinity Kappa speakers that I've pulled from my old car. Now the question is, how do I fit them into the 4Runner?
 
you can either use the factory rear speaker pod for the rears (but you will need to destroy the speaker since it is built onto the pod)

or get / make speaker plates (need to space the mounting flange of the speaker from the door-panel)

fronts, you will need some form of a bought / made speaker plate, and a 6"X9" to 5.25" adapter plate..
 
Any idea where to buy 6"X9" to 5.25" adapters for the front and 6.5" to 6"x9" for the rear????

The reason I want the 5.25" speakers up front is because they have separate mid-range woofers and tweeters.

By the way, the Alpine iva-w205 is finnaly out. I cannot wait to get it.

Just to warn you those things are pretty much junk (at least my Elemetal Designs 6.5" wouldn't even fit in them). I had ED make me some out of MDF for $10 a piece but haven't got them in yet. Plan to do the rears today so well see how that goes.
