So back in 2007 I took my 4runner down to Mexico. I had just gotten back from a deployment and was definitely overdoing it on the partying. So, like an idiot I thought it would be fun to take the 4runner off-roading after about 12 straight hours of heavy drinking. That was the first time I had ever really tested it's 4 wheel capabilities and was definitely impressed. Things got out of hand pretty quickly, and I ended up flipping the damn thing. I was going about 30mph and fishtailed into a burm. The wheels dug in, it rolled on its right side, popped up into the air a little, rolled on its left side, and then landed perfectly on its wheels. Now what's crazy about this whole thing is that there were 4 of us in the car, none of us were wearing our seatbelt, and we got out without a scratch on us. There were two tow hitches in the back that could have done some serious damage had they hit one of us, but instead flew right out the side window.
So this is why I feel such a bond to my 4runner. Not only did she save me and 3 other peoples lives when I was acting like a complete jackass, but she also taught me an incredibly valuable lesson. I was young and dumb, and in my head I figured that since I was in Mexico, there was no chance I could get a DUI. Back then you could get away with pretty much anything for about $20. I never thought there was a chance I could actually hurt myself, or worse, someone else. I realized that night that in the blink of an eye I could have killed some of my dearest friends, all because I made the incredibly irresponsible decision to drive. That was over 6 years ago and I still have a zero tolerance drinking and driving policy.
I've still got it, and she's about to hit 170k. Thanks to the members of this forum, I've been able to whip her into shape and I think I've still got a few good years left with her.
