My brakes are squeaking a bit, but they haven't got to a level where they bother me yet. But, with only 3K, they should be whisper quiet.
I had originally chalked it up to my beach runs for fishing: sand and salt. But I did a full wash, and they still squeak a bit.

In fact if you don't resurface the rotors there is a good chance your sqeal could get worse. Brake sqeal is not always an indicator of a problem. Changes in temperature,moisture can sometimes cause brakes to sqeal occasionally. The trade off is you could get a softer organic pad that is quieter but would not last as long as a semi-metalic pad that sqeal at times. Years ago I installed these pads that had a lot of metallic particles in them and while they probably would have outlasted the OEM pads, the sqeal was too much too take.
You also want to ensure you have the brake pad hardware to keep the pads stabilized in the caliper as this will cause noise as well.
I have had squealing brakes on both my '04 SR5 and my '05 Ltd. It happens mostly this time of year, perhaps with the change in temperature and perhaps humidity. I have taken both vehicles to the dealer, and under warranty, they service the brakes, one axle at a time, and it seems to go away until next year. I really don't object too much, as servicing is part of required maintenance and I don't have to pay, at least during the first 3 years!

my rear brakes have developed a squeal that the dealer said was caused by rust pits in the rotor...uuhh..ok...not sure about that, but the squeal only happens at a certain pressure on the pedal...

Well my 4R has entered the world of isolated brake squeaking, with 25k miles on it, I should not expect this from a 4R. My jeeps were horrible when it came to the brakes, always some sh*t when I went to the dealer with them, bent rotors, new pads needed and on and on. Like Iron Clad said above my squeaking occurs at different times, it is not consistent but happens at different pressures or declines etc.
I was hoping the switch to a 4R would take me away from this. With the return of cold weather up here and the return of my oh so favorite "droning and vibration at 70-75 mph" why not throw some brake squeaking on top of it to make me happy.

As I do love my 4Runner , I don't think their quality and commitment to customer satisfaction sucks.
You can get this and probably better commitment and customer satisfaction from any of the big 3 now days since they are all will to help with as much customer satisfaction as possible to win business...... like Toyota used to be.
It amazes me on how the dealers continually try to screw with you. I've never had a vehicle where I had to take in my own TSB's , pages from a repair manual to explain chit to them , just in order to get the work done properly and not have to argue.

i just replaced the brakes all around on my 04 because there was a mild squeak sometimes when i would apply the brakes. figured that replacing the rotors would be good enough, but last night (about a week after replacing them) they started the same noise again. the guy that did my pads said that the rotors didn't need replacing. i have to agree with him because i was standing right there looking at the same thing he was. don't know what that noise is all about, AND my tpms light is now flashing constantly...
I'm telling you, try the wagner thermo quite break pads. Get rid of the oem crap. My new rotors and wagner pads are awesome!!! You can buy them at most auto parts stores for around $50 per set.

I took my 4R into the dealer last week for an oil change and told them about the brakes squeaking. They said they would take a look at them. He also said that if they found something it was all covered by Toyota but if the brakes were fine I would have to pay $60 for the "brake inspection fee". I told them the brakes were squeaking and that I had better not see a brake inspection fee on the bill.
Well the mechanic said the brakes were perfectly fine, everything checked out and that it was mositure on the pads that was causing the squeaking. I can say that have been squeaking more with the wet snow etc lately. The dealer mechanic suggested stomping on the brakes to get the moisture out if they start squeaking.....oh well, who knows.

I just replaced my front pads with OEM (at 81k), and I haven't heard the occasional squeel any more. Then again, it's the middle of winter here (only getting up to 62f today :satan: ), so I don't always have the windows open to hear it!LeesO4 said:
BTW: I really liked changing these brakes - the easiest I've ever done. Don't even have to take the calipers off. Gotta love that!
If the rotors are warped, do you always feel it? Maybe a couple times a day I feel some slight shuddering when applying the brakes. But then nothing the rest of the time.

I only happens when I stop from a relatively slow speed (around 30MPH). It also happens when I stop while turning (like when you're about to enter a road from a side street).
It is the only issue other than the sulfur smell that has returned that pisses me off about my T4R. :bash:
When I mentioned it during the last scheduled maintenance work, the mechanic said he didn't find anything (big surprise).

Sometimes its gets sickening when they look at you like you bring it in for imaginary problems.
But you know if you were out of warranty they would try to do something about it to rack up a bill.
They get paid squat for warranty work , so it gets avoided as much as possible.
